Two academic leaders from Saint Paul University Surigaoโs College of Health Sciences (CHS) successfully completed the prestigious NurseLEAD program, culminating in intensive face-to-face sessions at the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila College of Nursing from June 1 to 3, 2026.
During the postgraduate training, CHS Dean Ms. Kristal Liza C. Besario and faculty member Ms. Rolyn Pogosa designed specialized capstone projects aimed at elevating public health nursing education, with the deanโs work earning national distinction.
Ms. Besarioโs capstone project, titled "Compass Care: Structuring Experiential Learning Strategies for Compassionate and Practice-Ready Public Health Nursing," was officially selected for an oral presentation at the nationwide NurseLEAD Summit held in Clark, Pampanga, from July 9 to 10.
However, despite her project's selection, the dean was ultimately unable to present her research in person due to severe regional ashfall, which triggered sudden airline flight cancellations and prevented her from traveling to the venue.
While the natural disruption kept her from presenting on-stage, university officials noted that the selection of Besario's innovative curriculum framework remains a major milestone for SPUS and its health sciences program.
The NurseLEAD course is a trailblazing postgraduate initiative developed by the UP College of Nursing, a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for Leadership in Nursing Development. Organized in partnership with the Global Community Impact of Johnson & Johnson, the program is implemented through the Give2Asia Foundation, the UP Foundation, Inc., and the UPCN Foundation, Inc., to equip nursing educators with advanced leadership skills in primary healthcare.
