UB CCJ Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology Class Conducts Test Firing and Paraffin Casting

The Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology Class conducted a test firing and paraffin casting activity as their culminating laboratory exercise on December 10, 2025. The test firing was facilitated by Sir Ian Cyrill Martinez and Crmgst. Bernard Bapilar, while the paraffin casting was guided by Forensic 3 Instructor Ms. Lorefi P. Austral.

To examine the presence of gunpowder residue, a test firing was first conducted in the Ballistics Laboratory, followed by the Diphenylamine -Paraffin Test, also known as the Dermal Nitrate Test - a forensic procedure used to determine whether an individual has recently discharged a firearm with bare hands. The process involves two key stages: paraffin casting, in which a mold of the hands is taken to collect possible nitrate residues embedded in the skin, and the diphenylamine test, which is the chemical analysis of the cast to determine the presence and distribution of nitrates. The result is indicated by the formation of deep blue specks when the collected residues react with the diphenylamine reagent.

This laboratory activity was conducted to provide students with firsthand experience in performing the diphenylamine -paraffin test and to enhance their familiarity with its proper procedures. It also allowed them to better understand its practical application and importance in forensic investigations, helping prepare them for their future roles as criminologists. In line with the mission of the College of Criminal Justice, the activity further strengthened the students’ professional competence, ethical responsibility, and commitment to excellence in the pursuit of justice and public service.

The University of Bohol College of Criminal Justice proudly celebrates its expanding presence in international research.

At the 13th International Conference on Multidisciplinary Research, themed “From Discovery to Application: Multidisciplinary Approaches to Innovation and Impact,” 𝐃𝐫. 𝐀𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐟𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚-𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚 represented UB with remarkable scholarly contribution during the December 1–3, 2025.

Building on this achievement, December 3–5, 2025 saw, 𝐂𝐂𝐉 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐫. 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐎𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐚-𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚, along with CCJ student delegates 𝐒𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐚 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞 𝐋. 𝐆𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐨 (3rd Year) and 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐎. 𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚 (2nd Year), proudly represented UB CCJ as research presenters at the 16th Annual Conference of the Asian Criminological Society, held at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.

Our researchers continue to prove that UB CCJ stands strong in advancing criminological scholarship, showcasing excellence, insight, and dedication on the global stage.
