A law student asked me this:

“Atty. do I really need to memorize provisions of the law in order to pass the bar?”

My Answer to him:

First, I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of pure memorization. I don’t have a photographic memory, and as a working law student, I didn’t have the luxury of spending endless hours memorizing provisions word for word. More importantly, I discovered that memorization alone doesn’t work for me. It’s like filling your mind with data but not knowing when or how to use it.

Instead, I follow a three-step approach: understanding, retention, and application (URA).

1. Understanding.
Before anything else, I make sure I truly understand the concept behind the provision. Once you grasp why the law says what it says, it becomes much easier to remember. Law is logical, every rule has a reason.

2. Retention.
When you understand something deeply, it naturally stays with you longer. I reinforce this by revisiting the concepts through quick reviews or by discussing them with classmates.

3. Application.
Finally, I apply what I’ve learned, to past bar exam questions, case digests, and practical scenarios. This is where understanding turns into mastery. When you practice applying the law to facts, the provisions begin to “stick” without forcing yourself to memorize every word.

So, to answer your question, no, you don’t need to memorize every provision verbatim to pass the Bar. What you need is to understand the law so well that even if you don’t recall the exact words, you can explain and apply the principle accurately and confidently. That’s what the Bar exam really tests, not really your memory, but your mastery.

That’s the method that helped me survive law school and the Bar. I hope it helps you find your own rhythm in studying the law.

ICE CREAM VENDOR TO VALEDICTORIAN LAW GRAD!

Jorenz Obiedo, once a porter and dirty ice cream vendor, is now a valedictorian law graduate batch 2024 of the UCC College of Law.

In a televised interview, he shared his experiences, which were incredibly not a walk in the park. He remembers how he juggled multiple jobs—including being a sorbetero, kargador, dishwasher at a lugawan, and even a hardware boy—in order to send himself to law school. Nevertheless, despite having to work while studying, he managed to finish law school with flying colors.

While we're making excuses, this man was rewriting his entire life.

"Coal Miner No. 3" started his life in the darkness - literally. While other kids were playing, he was underground with his father, learning what it meant to survive in one of the world's toughest jobs.

His family was dirt poor. His mother ran the household while he and his father descended into coal mines every day. But this boy had something burning inside him that no amount of poverty could extinguish.

He studied by candlelight and worked construction, waited tables, cooked in kitchens - whatever it took to stay in school. At 19, after failing his college entrance exam once, he tried again and made it into vocational college.

But he didn't stop there. He pushed through to postgraduate studies, spending over a year working in brutal mining conditions in Shanxi province. Then as a PhD student, he endured another year of fieldwork in the harsh terrain of Xinjiang.

He owned two pairs of pants - one was borrowed from his roommate who also bought him his first phone. When he met his girlfriend at 27, he called her "a ray of light in my life."

He eventually earned his PhD from Beijing University of Technology, specializing in tunnel boring machines that make mining safer. His thesis ended with his life philosophy: "A man's heart stays firm as iron to his last day."

From the bottom of a coal mine to the top of his field. That's not just education - that's transformation through pure will.

His story went viral because sometimes we all need proof that where you start doesn't determine where you finish.

Testimonial for CAP College Foundation, Inc.

As an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), based in Kuwait, pursuing higher education seemed like an impossible dream due to time constraints and my responsibilities abroad. But thanks to CAP College’s distance learning program, I was able to earn my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology without leaving my job or compromising my responsibilities.

The flexible learning system allowed me to study at my own pace, despite the challenges of being in a different country and time zone. The modules were well-prepared, and the guidance from the CAP faculty and staff gave me the confidence and motivation to finish what I started. Their support was consistent—even from afar.

CAP College opened doors for me, not just professionally but also personally. It proved that no matter where you are, education is still possible if you have the will—and the right institution that believes in you. I will always be proud to be a graduate of CAP College. Thank you for being part of my journey and success.

Maraming salamat po sa inyong tiwala, suporta, at malasakit sa mga katulad kong OFW na may pangarap makapagtapos ng pag-aaral.

LIFE INSPIRING STORY
Congratulations sir! 🎉🎈🥰

“At 55, I finally achieved my long-held dream of completing my degree in Business Economics. Balancing family responsibilities and work had previously put my aspirations on hold. However, with perseverance and determination, I was able to overcome the challenges.

Now, I'm thrilled to have joined my children, who have graduated from prestigious universities in the Philippines, in the ranks of college graduates. My entire family - my spouse and three children - have all earned their college degrees, and I'm proud to display my graduation photo alongside theirs.

This milestone marks a significant accomplishment, and I'm grateful to have achieved it.
