Looking at Spider Man’s box office history, it is honestly difficult to believe how much money this character has generated over the years. Spider Man: No Way Home became a massive $1.9 billion worldwide blockbuster, while Far From Home crossed $1.1 billion. Even the earlier films starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield pulled in hundreds of millions globally.

And here is the crazy part. Back in the late 1990s, Marvel was struggling financially and eventually sold the Spider Man film rights to Sony for a reported $7 million. At the time, superhero movies were nowhere near the guaranteed blockbuster business they are today. But looking back now, that deal feels almost unbelievable.

Sony turned Spider Man into one of the biggest movie franchises in Hollywood, while Marvel later had to work with Sony to bring Peter Parker into the MCU. Sony still finances, distributes and controls the Spider Man films, while Marvel Studios has played a major creative role in the MCU movies.

Considering what Spider Man has become, that $7 million deal has to be one of the most fascinating bargains in entertainment history.
