๐Ÿ“ป RADIO FUNDAMENTALS: Amateur Radio in Emergency Communications๐Ÿšจ

When natural disasters or technical failures occur, communication systems such as cell towers, internet services, and power networks may become unavailable or disrupted.

This is where amateur radio operators can provide an important communication link. ๐Ÿ“ก

๐Ÿ”น 1. A RADIO OPERATOR STAYS READY
When cell service and the internet are unavailable, trained amateur radio operators can still communicate using their radios. With battery-powered and portable equipment, they can stay connected even during a power outage.

๐Ÿ”น 2. OPERATORS BUILD A RADIO NETWORK
One radio operator doesnโ€™t have to work alone. Operators can connect with other stations and use repeaters or HF radio to pass messages from one location to anotherโ€”without depending on the internet or cell towers.

๐Ÿ”น 3. IMPORTANT INFORMATION GETS THROUGH
During an emergency, even a simple message can be important. Radio operators can help relay information about where help is needed, current conditions, safety concerns, and requests for assistance to emergency teams and communities.

๐Ÿ“ก WHY IS AMATEUR RADIO USEFUL IN EMERGENCIES?

๐Ÿ”‹ Can operate with backup power
๐Ÿ“ต Doesnโ€™t require cellular service or internet
๐Ÿ“ป Portable and can be used in different locations
๐Ÿค Helps people and response teams stay connected

Amateur radio isnโ€™t about replacing our everyday communication systems. It provides another way to communicate when those systems are unavailable or overwhelmed.

Because when everything else goes quiet, being able to get a message through can make a real difference. ๐Ÿ“ปโค๏ธ

No signal? No internet? Power outage?
Radio operators can help keep the message moving.

๐Ÿ“ป RADIO FUNDAMENTALS: From Microphone to Antenna! ๐Ÿ“ก

Ever wondered how your voice travels through a radio and reaches someone miles away? Letโ€™s break it down! ๐ŸŽ™๏ธโžก๏ธ๐Ÿ“ปโžก๏ธ๐Ÿ“ก

The process starts when an operator speaks, creating sound waves. The microphone converts those sound waves into an electrical audio signal. The transmitter then processes the audio and uses it to modulate a radio-frequency carrier. The transmitting antenna converts the RF electrical signal into electromagnetic waves that travel through space. Finally, the receiving antenna captures those waves and converts them back into an RF electrical signal for the receiver to process. ๐Ÿ”Š

When All Else Fails... ๐Ÿ“ปโšก

September is National Preparedness Month, a timely reminder that emergencies can happen anywhere, anytime. When severe weather hits or power grids and cellular networks go down, one communication channel remains steadfast: Amateur Radio.

Through organized emergency networks like the Amateur Radio Emergency Serviceยฎ (ARESยฎ), licensed volunteers provide crucial backup communications to first responders, local emergency managers, and neighbors in need.

How can you get prepared this month?

โœ…Build a Kit: Include a battery- or hand-crank powered emergency radio.
โœ…Make a Plan: Establish a family communication strategy for when phone lines are overloaded.
โœ…Get Involved: Discover how easy it is to earn your amateur radio license and join a network of trained volunteers in your area!

The Department of Engineering Education successfully held Campus Tour 2026 at UMTC-Visayan Campus today, August 12, 2026.

In coordination with DSG-DEE and the members of ACCESS, AECES, EESA, and HEARS, the activity was conducted to welcome freshmen and transferees and help them become familiar with the rooms and buildings of the Engineering Department throughout the Visayan Campus.

As part of the activity, the newly elected officers of these organizations pledged their commitment to leadership and service.

Following the pledge, the tour commenced, providing participants with an opportunity to explore the departmentโ€™s facilities, laboratories, and learning spaces while gaining a better understanding of their academic environment.

More than just an introduction to their new surroundings, the tour also gave them a glimpse of the experiences, opportunities, and community that await them at UMTC.

We proudly congratulate the 22 newly licensed amateur radio operators from UMTC-HEARS (10 Class C, and 12 Class D). This achievement reflects their dedication, discipline, and commitment to mastering the principles and responsibilities of amateur radio communication. Their accomplishment marks an important milestone, not only in their personal journeys but also in strengthening the community of skilled and responsible radio operators.

As they begin this new chapter, may they continue to uphold the values of integrity, service, and continuous learning in both the field of amateur radio and as electronics and electrical engineering students.

UMTC-HEARS commends their perseverance and looks forward to their active participation in promoting effective communication, public service, and technical excellence. Congratulations once again to our newly licensed operators.

There is nothing quite like the feeling of finally putting your license to work! ๐Ÿ“ปโœจ

Instead of just framing their new Amateur Radio Operator Certificates, our newly licensed operators jumped straight into the field to get their hands dirty. Guided by Amateur Radio Club DX9NHR, the HEARS team got to work setting up antennas, tuning base radios, and turning textbook theory into real-world contact.

This wasn't just practiceโ€”it was their official welcome into the amateur radio community.

Watch the highlights to see the incredible energy, teamwork, and passion that made this milestone so unforgettable!

๐ŸŒ Weather Watch from Space ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

This morningโ€™s Meteor M2-3 satellite pass gave us a clear look at the Philippines. Scattered clouds stretch across Luzon and Visayas, while a dense cloud system southeast of Mindanao hints at stronger convection building up.
