DAY 1 | GHF UNIVERSITY EXCELLENCE WORKSHOP
Synergizing Extension and Research: A Strategic Workshop on Translating Extension Works into Scientific Journal Publications
The University of Northwestern Mindanao (UNM) once again welcomed Global Health Focus (GHF) for a three-day academic engagement focused on strengthening the connection between extension practice and scholarly research.
The GHF University Excellence Workshop: βSynergizing Extension and Research: A Strategic Workshop on Translating Extension Works into Scientific Journal Publicationsβ is being conducted on September 21β23, 2026, bringing together UNM faculty, researchers, extension practitioners, and academic leaders in a focused program designed to transform valuable community-based extension experiences into publishable scientific scholarship.
The workshop is facilitated by:
π€ Dr. Don Eliseo Lucero-Prisno III
Founder, Global Health Focus (GHF)
π€ Mr. Jerico B. Ogaya
Programme Manager, GHF Universities Excellence
DAY 1 | FOUNDATIONS AND TRANSLATION OF EXTENSION WORK INTO SCHOLARSHIP
The first day established the conceptual and strategic foundations for connecting research, extension, scientific publishing, and university excellence.
π PART I β Foundations of Research-Driven University Excellence
Session 1: Understanding the Landscape of Scientific Publishing
Participants explored global trends in scholarly publishing, the evolution of academic publishing ecosystems, and contemporary publishing models, including open-access and hybrid journals.
Session 2: The Role of Research in University Excellence
The discussion examined research productivity, institutional prestige, research indicators used in global rankings, and the relationship among research impact, institutional reputation, and innovation.
Session 3: Understanding Global University Rankings
Participants gained insights into major ranking systems, including THE, QS, and ARWU, as well as key research metrics and institutional strategies for strengthening research performance.
PART II β Translating Extension Terminal Reports into Publishable Manuscripts
The afternoon sessions shifted the focus from understanding research excellence to turning existing extension work into scholarly outputs.
Session 4: Reframing Community Extension Work as Publishable Scholarship
Participants examined extension activities as sources of scholarly evidence and learned to identify publishable elements within community-based projects, particularly their impact, innovations, and local knowledge.
Session 5: From Terminal Report to Scientific Manuscript
The session highlighted the distinction between an extension terminal report and a scientific journal article, emphasizing how project objectives, methodologies, outcomes, and impact indicators can be extracted and reorganized into appropriate manuscript sections.
π‘ DAY 1 HIGHLIGHT
The first day emphasized a fundamental principle: valuable extension work should not end with a terminal report.
Community engagement generates experiences, evidence, innovations, lessons, and outcomes that can contribute to the broader body of knowledge when they are systematically documented and transformed into scholarly publications.
Through this workshop, UNM continues to strengthen the synergy between extension and research, creating pathways for community-based initiatives to become evidence, evidence to become knowledge, and knowledge to generate wider academic and societal impact.
π Three days. One shared direction. From extension practice to scientific publication.
As the workshop continues, participants will further develop their capacity to translate meaningful community work into rigorous, credible, and publishable scientific manuscripts.
Day 1 successfully accomplished. The journey from extension to publication continues.
