Pokémon Gold & Silver were supposed to end the series forever—until one programmer secretly saved it?

When Game Freak began developing Pokémon Gold and Silver for the Game Boy, the team intended for them to be the final, ultimate Pokémon titles before wrapping up the franchise. However, they ran into a massive problem: the 1MB cartridge was completely full after fitting the new Johto region, leaving no room for extra features or fixes. Step in Satoru Iwata—a genius programmer who would later become Nintendo's CEO. Without even looking at the original source code documentation, Iwata wrote a brand-new, hyper-efficient compression tool in his spare time. He shrank the game's data so drastically that he not only freed up space for Johto, but created enough leftover room to fit the entire Kanto region from Red & Blue onto the cartridge as a massive post-game surprise.

Fighting game combos weren't designed on purpose? They started as a glitch in Street Fighter II!

While developing 1991's Street Fighter II, producer Noritaka Funamizu noticed a bug in the car-smashing bonus stage. If a player timed their button presses precisely, they could cancel the recovery animation of one attack by inputting a second strike. This allowed one attack to connect before the opponent could recover, chaining hits together seamlessly.

Funamizu thought the timing window was far too tight for average arcade players to pull off consistently, so he left it in as a hidden trick. Players quickly discovered it, turned it into high-level tech, and transformed the fighting game genre forever.
