In todayโs generation, as wars between countries continue, we are reminded that humanity still lives within each and every one of us. That is why, in August, we celebrate ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ง๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐๐ฎ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ง ๐๐๐ฐ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ก, where every act of hope, humility, and kindness brings us closer to peace.
For more than seven decades, the Philippines has been committed to the rules that protect humanity in times of war. In 2009, the Philippines enacted This law incorporated major IHL-related crimes into Philippine domestic law.

Nine years after the fighting stopped in Marawi, families from the city are still asking the painful question, With this, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has registered more than 300 people who went missing during the 2017 Marawi conflict. For their families, the uncertainty is especially painful because they cannot fully grieve, move forward, or even settle some legal and financial matters without knowing what happened to their loved ones.
In 2025, the International Committee of the Red Cross created ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐ผ๐ธ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ ๐ฒ๐บ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ (๐๐ป๐ด ๐๐ธ๐น๐ฎ๐ ๐ป๐ด ๐ ๐ด๐ฎ ๐๐น๐ฎ๐ฎ๐น๐ฎ), a 77-page collection featuring the stories of 32 families, along with photographs and treasured belongings of their missing loved ones. This book was not simply published to remember those who disappeared; it was also created to keep their stories alive as their families continue to wait and search for answers.
The Marawi narrative serves as a reminder that International Humanitarian Law (IHL) safeguards not just individuals during armed conflict but also the humanity, rights, and dignity of those who are left behind. Every memory holds hope for the families who are still waiting, and every unanswered question bears the burden of a loved one they will never forget.
Because when the fighting ends, the search for answers does not always end with it. And perhaps, this is what IHL reminds us most: even in the darkest moments of conflict, humanity must never be forgotten.
