The Art of Clay: Bandoja's Pottery Making Heritage
Antique is one of the provinces in the Philippines known for its traditional pottery-making. Tibiao is a major producer of pottery, particularly in the barangay of Bandoja, also known as "Lupaan," situated between Sta. Justa and Tigbaboy.
According to local pottery makers, the craft has been passed down from their forefathers. They create various types of pots, including flower vases, flower pots, kalans, and bricks, using traditional methods with a wheel and a piece of cloth. The primary ingredient, clay, is sourced from a specific location in Bandoja near the paddy fields.
Despite the presence of competitors, the people of Bandoja continue to practice this traditional craft. While other towns in Antique, such as Sibalom, Barbaza, and Libertad, also produce pottery, the elder makers claim that Bandoja's products are distinct due to their durability and quality.
The pottery makers face challenges, particularly during the rainy season when they cannot obtain clay. They also struggle with firing the kiln using bamboo or rice husks. However, with the support of local associations, tourism, and companies, the pottery makers have gained recognition and are now able to sell their products to various stores, earning extra income and promoting their craft.
Pottery making has become a vital source of livelihood in Bandoja, allowing some families to send their children to college and attain their own professions.
