CHED-SIKAP is a prestigious Philippine government scholarship that provides financial support to teaching and non-teaching personnel of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) pursuing Master’s or Doctorate degrees in approved universities nationwide. The scholarship covers tuition and other school fees, monthly stipends, and research allowances, making graduate studies more accessible for faculty development.

This marks a major milestone for the Department of Fisheries- Faculty of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, and the entire Graduate Education unit of Visayas State University, as this is the first time that these two MSFi programs have been granted eligibility under a national scholarship program. Truly a breakthrough!

On behalf of the Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, VSU Tolosa, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Graduate Education Office, under the leadership of Dr. Marilyn Belarmino, as well as to the Graduate Education faculty and staff for their guidance, support, and commitment to elevating our graduate programs to greater heights. Calling all youth, members of the academe, farmers, fisherfolk, public officials, athletes, civil society organizations, and all advocates of our municipal waters and small-scale fishers!

Visayas State University Tolosa, through the Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, in collaboration with Too Big To Ignore Philippines and Oceana, will hold Solidarity Walk 2026: Aton an Kinse—a walk-for-a-cause initiative advocating for the protection of the Philippines’ municipal waters and small-scale fisheries.

The activity will be held on Saturday, 31 January 2026, featuring a historic and symbolic walk from Visayas State University Tolosa, Brgy. Tanghas, Tolosa, Leyte, to MacArthur Park, Brgy. Candahug, Palo, Leyte.

This initiative is organized in solidarity with municipal and small-scale fishers who may be adversely affected by the 19 August 2024 ruling of the Supreme Court First Division, which upheld a Malabon Trial Court decision allowing Mercidar Fishing Corporation, a commercial fishing company, to operate within municipal waters—areas traditionally reserved for small-scale fishers.

In this light, we invite all interested sectors to join us in this collective call—to amplify the voices of some of the least represented yet most vital communities in our country.
All necessary permits and coordination letters have already been processed with the concerned Local Government Units and partner agencies. Additional event details are attached.

VSU Tolosa showcased excellence with an 70% passing rate for first-time takers and 76.92% for repeaters, culminating in an institutional passing rate of 72.72%—far surpassing the national average of 69.61%.

The department commends the unwavering dedication and hard work of its graduates, whose pursuit of excellence brings pride not only to the department but also to the entire university.

This year, under the supervision of the Graduate Education Office of Visayas State University, the Graduate Education Unit of VSU Tolosa proudly announces that two students from the Master of Science in Fisheries major in Aquaculture program have successfully earned their degrees. Both graduates took part in the 50th Commencement Exercises of VSU Tolosa held last July 17, 2025, proudly wearing the university’s green and gold academic regalia.

Yesterday, we highlighted the achievement of Mr. Jayson Narrido, one of the graduates who exemplified academic excellence and VSU pride during this important occasion.

Today, we turn the spotlight to another exceptional alumna of the MSFi program—Ms. Almyrrha Lourieclaire Merez-Itol, currently serving as Program Coordinator at the Provincial Capitol of Biliran.

Fondly known as “Ms. Meng” by her professors and classmates, Ms. Itol shared a heartfelt, inspiring, and candid testimony that captured her journey marked by perseverance, resilience, and academic determination. Her reflections highlighted the many challenges she faced and the triumph she ultimately achieved in pursuing graduate studies at VSU Tolosa. She shared how her desire to be called a —and to one day wear the prestigious green and gold regalia—served as a strong personal motivation throughout her academic pursuit.

Below is an excerpt from her testimony, where she reflects on how her MSFi major in Aquaculture journey has significantly shaped her work as a Program Coordinator. She fondly shares here how her graduate education not only refined her technical knowledge but also enhanced her engagement with various stakeholders—most especially the fisherfolk whom she continues to serve with dedication and passion.
