The Graduate Education Unit of Visayas State University, through the Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Hely M. Awit, a Master of Science in Fisheries student major in Aquaculture, for successfully passing his Comprehensive Examination on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

Mr. Awit is under the guidance of Dr. Quenstein D. Lauzon as his adviser, with Asst. Prof. Fermina C. Genson and Dr. June Rey A. Montajes serving as members of his Graduate Advisory Committee.

Excellence in Action: 29 New Fisheries Professionals

The Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, VSU Tolosa, proudly celebrates 29 new Fisheries Professionals who successfully passed the Fisheries Professionals Licensure Examination held on October 1-2, 2026.

VSU Tolosa continues to showcase excellence, achieving an outstanding 96.15% passing rate among first-time takers and an overall school performance of 76.32%, surpassing the 69.02% national passing rate.

May you carry forward the knowledge, passion, and dedication that have shaped your journey. May you continue to make a meaningful difference in the fisheries profession and in the communities you serve.

The Visayas State University Tolosa Graduate Education proudly recognizes Mr. Agner Anthony Ocleaza, a graduate student of VSU Tolosa, for representing Visayas State University at the 17th University Consortium Graduate Forum 2026, held at Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia, with the theme:

“Building Research Capacity for Food Security: Innovating Solutions for Sustainable Systems.”

Together with Mr. Enrico Pitogo Bargamento of the VSU Main Campus, Mr. Ocleaza presented his research and contributed to the international academic exchange on food security, agricultural innovation, and sustainable development.

Mr. Ocleaza presented his study entitled “Evaluation of Black Soldier Fly (𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘢 𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘴) Larvae Meal on the Growth Performance and Survival of Nile Tilapia (𝘖𝘳𝘦𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘴)
Fingerlings.” His research explores the potential of black soldier fly larvae meal as an alternative and sustainable feed ingredient for aquaculture, contributing to efforts toward innovative and sustainable food production.

His participation in this international forum reflects the growing capacity of VSU graduate scholars to conduct relevant research, share scientific knowledge, and actively participate in global academic platforms. It also demonstrates the university’s commitment to advancing research and innovation that address emerging challenges in food security and sustainable development.

The VSU Tolosa Graduate Education commends Mr. Ocleaza for his dedication, confidence, and valuable contribution as a representative of the university. Alibangbang of the Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Visayas State University Tolosa, was among the Visayas State University delegates to the 8th University Consortium (UC) Faculty Forum held at Maejo University, Chiang Mai, Thailand, on July 27–28, 2026.
Carrying the forum theme, "IWA: Intelligent Wellbeing Agriculture toward Sustainable Development," Instr. Alibangbang presented her research entitled, "From Waste to Wellness: Functional Characterization and Application of Chitosan Biopolymers for Sustainable Tropical Beverage Innovation and Vibrio Control."
The UC Faculty Forum convened faculty members, researchers, industry representatives, and development practitioners from University Consortium member institutions across Southeast Asia and partner universities. The two-day forum provided a venue for presenting research outputs, exchanging scientific knowledge, strengthening inter-university collaboration, and discussing innovations that contribute to sustainable agriculture and community development.
The forum was supported by the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), which promotes regional research collaboration and capacity building among higher education institutions. Instr. Alibangbang's participation in the international forum was fully funded through the event support program and Visayas State University.
