4th Year Researchers compete in Research Congress 2023, SLSU Campus Day

As one of the scholarly events during the 19th Charter Anniversary of SLSU-Tomas Oppus Campus, fourth-year students from different areas of specialization congregated in the mini-theatre at 28 February 2023, Tuesday, and presented their papers for the research competition.

The activity began at 1:24 PM with an invocation, singing of the national anthem, and reading of the mechanics and criteria by Dr. Mark B. Galdo. One of the mechanics highlighted by Dr. Galdo is the exclusion of students who have already experienced and won awards from university to international fora.

The eight groups, with at least four research presenters each, were given a 10-minute presentation of the paper. Only one presenter from each group was allowed to briefly discuss the highlights of their research, while the rest were given the chance to hold the mic during the 5-minute question-and-answer portion.

The giving of certificates took place after the presentation of all groups, while the awarding proceeded at the covered court. The Best Presenter Award was received by Xerxes Tynn S. Moralita, a pride from BSED-Social Science, an author of the research Mga Saysay sa Katigulangan (Tales of Old Folks).

Three best papers were recognized. First, the Differentiated Instruction in Teaching Science: A Meta-Synthesis by the BSED-Science authors namely, Jezeerhaelle S. Apiag, Alfie M. Enaje, Jean Ralph P. Felicilda, and Mercy Ann G. Lintao. Second, the Kahandaan ng Mga G**o sa Filipino sa Pagbuo ng mga Kagamitang Pampagtuturo sa Bagong-Himtang from the Kapisanan ng Filipino. Third, was the Soc-sci authors’ Mga Saysay sa Katigulangan (Tales of Old Folks).

“Part and parcel of SLSU Mission is to advance research and innovation, and what we are doing right now is the manifestation of how we SLSU are committed to do research for the development of us all.” Dave P. Rellanos, the event host, stated on his introductory speech.

Lesigon, MAEd from San Isidro Elementary School, and Dr. Lorelie J. Paloma from SLSU-Main Campus. Apart from the contestants and judges, there were student teacher facilitators and grade 7 students from SLSU-TO LHS who were also present in the venue. The MC of the event introduced the first presenter, Angelo Boyboy who was the representative from BSEd major in Mathematics. Boyboy discussed about sets, then gave the students a by pair activity and an individual exam. When there was already 5 minutes left, he gave his conclusion and ended his performance by giving the students an assignment.

Everyone did not need to guess the next presenter because of the taekwondo training bag that was brought in the room. Raprap Morales from Bachelor of Physical Education made the students learn new experience about sports. He introduced his topic which was about the 5 basic kicks in taekwondo and students executed the kicks at the fitness gym. He ended his presentation with the students doing the Dionesia applause and gave their homework. The third presenter was Emelle Justin Adcor from the English department. He asked the students how they were feeling and a student said that she felt stressed. He replied that it is okay to feel that way because stress is inevitable, especially as a student. He later on had the preliminary activity, which was based on the T.V. show who wants to be a millionaire. After that, he introduced the topic, which was the Subject Verb Agreement. Because of the lack of time, he wrapped up his topic and had the evaluation.

The fourth presenter was Nino Paul Aguilar, a BSEd major in Social Science. After two activities, he gave an assignment as an end to his presentation. Marklene Pepito was the next to enter the room. She is a Science major who gave the students knowledge about acids and bases. The students were scientists for the day since they tested the 5 beakers with substances using a litmus paper and a PH indicator to know if it was an acid or a base. She showed a video so students can further understand her topic. Students were given an activity; however it was not finished because of the lack of time.

The last presenter was from BEED. She is Crystal Labunog, a music teacher. She discussed about tempo and had an activity which required students to raise green as slow and red as fast every time a random song was played. The students had a Darna applause and was given an assignment before ending her presentation.

The announcement of the winners was announced at SLSU-TO covered court in the afternoon. Before that, the contestants were first given a certificate of participation. Students cheered when Dr. Sybill Ledesma announced the department who was best in lesson planning, and it was from BPEd. The 3rd placer for the demonstration teaching contest was Nino Aguilar from the BSEd Social Science, the second placer was Crystal Labunog from BEEd. The winner of the contest was none other than Raprap Morales from the BPEd. He was given a chance to share a message where he thanked everyone who helped him and told the aspiring contestants to always believe in their selves.

SSC conducts first General Assembly

The first general assembly, which was headed by the SSC took place at SLSU-Tomas Oppus covered court on February 27, 2023. It summarized the SSC’s accomplishment reports from August 2022 to February 2023 and the financial report from December 2022 until February 2023. The next part of the assembly was the discussion about the upcoming campus day.

The accomplishment reports shown are the summary of activities they have accomplished from the first activity, the Leadership and Parliamentary Procedure Training on August 12 to 13 until the recent on February 15, the Valentine’s Day Celebration. After the SSC treasurer discussed the summary of the remaining funds, the President of SSC addressed the Campus Day. The Campus Day, which is going to be held on February 28, 2023 will start with a fun run at 4 in the morning, followed by a mass at 8 in the morning and the laro ng lahi in the afternoon.

The open forum was the last part of the program. A suggestion was raised when a student proposed that the 10 pesos should be used for future activities of the SSC, instead of giving it to the University for upcoming events. Joshua Orais addressed this suggestion saying that the University has insufficient funds for the event. Another student asked on why they did not include the previous funds in the financial report from the former SSC and advised them that they should be giving out pamphlets for the students at the back who are unable to see the screen in front. The SSC treasurer responded that they were not given any amount by the previous SSC. Questions that were further raised were about the Campus Day, specifically the fun run that was turned into a donation drive. Instead of paying 100 pesos and making it compulsory, everyone can run at any amount they will give.

Before the general assembly ended, the new SSC adviser, Mrs. Doreen Rosello gave her closing remarks. She thanked everyone who attended the assembly, and also gave a message that it is the responsibility of the students to support the activities of the University.

SLSU TO holds Pinning Ceremony for BEED, BPED, and BSED

To mark the transition from students to student teachers, SLSU held the Pinning Ceremony 2022 for the Education Program on February 8, 2023, at SLSU-TO Covered Court.

One hundred fifty-seven Student Teachers (ST) from Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED), Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED), and Bachelor of Physical Education (BPED) filled the venue, dressed in tea green, all set to have their uniforms pinned.

At 7 in the morning, the program kicked off with the contract signing between the parents and the ST coordinators. Then, a few minutes before 9, Dr. Pritzel Lee G. Capili, ST Coordinator for BPED, took the microphone to remind the parents that the race is not finished yet and the rest of the trip will require more financial and emotional support from parents.

The second part of the ceremony began with the opening remarks of Mr. Dave L. Rellanos, Student Teacher's Organization (STO) President, followed by an inspirational talk from the newly-installed College Dean, Dr. Clemente H. Cobilla, who shared his definition of the term PIN – Professionalism and/or Personal Life, the ability to Initiate and Innovate, and the ability to Nurture one's support system. The end of his speech cued the beginning of the most-awaited part – the pinning of the nameplates.

The presentation of pins was headed by Mr. Joseph Anavesa, BSED English and Filipino Coordinator; Dr. Melbert O. Hungo, BSED Science and Math Coordinator; Mr. Rey C. Guinoo, BSED Social Studies Coordinator; Mr. Nonilon B. Consul, BEED Coordinator, and Dr. Pritzel Lee G. Capili, BPED Coordinator.

When all STs were pinned, the department heads of BPED, BEED, and BSED gave their message to their beloved STs. Dr. Criselyn Sescon reminded the "survivors" that adversities are always inevitable. To overcome them, the STs must be respectful of time, be flexible to requests, and keep their determination. Ma'am Jovillea Palanca noted the importance of keeping one's poise throughout the day since teachers should embody external and internal grace. Lastly, Dr. Norlyn Borong cited that the event is a walk to remember in becoming professional teachers. STs and their sponsors should celebrate how they are one step closer to realizing their dreams.

Ms. Regina Mae Malate, Ms. April Rose Auditor, Mr. Lysander Lumanta, and Ms. Krisiel Marie Laguna gave their speeches on the hardships of the previous years and the glory of the Practice Teaching journey, which all STs agree will be colorful and challenging. The program ended with Ms. Laguna's words reverberating to the crowd, inciting euphoria as she noted that the STs present were the students who dared to continue and that they are almost there. Many were called and chosen, but only a few dared to continue. "Thank you for clinging on to the word padayon."

The attendees paid tribute to the university by singing the SLSU Hymn. The photo opportunity followed, signaling the end of the ceremony.
