Every thesis begins with a question.
For students, research may sometimes feel like a requirement to complete before graduation. Yet beyond the papers, methodologies, and deadlines lies something much simpler: curiosity.
This idea took center stage during the webinar โ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ณ๐จ๐ณ๐ข๐ฅ๐ถ๐ข๐ต๐ฆ ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ด๐ช๐ด ๐๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ด: ๐๐ฏ๐ข๐ญ๐บ๐ป๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐๐ข๐ด๐ต ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฅ๐ช๐ฆ๐ด ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐๐ช๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐๐ฆ๐ด๐ฆ๐ข๐ณ๐ค๐ฉ ๐๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ช๐ค ๐๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ข๐ด,โ held on September 25, 2026, with Dr. Rogela A. Flores, Chair of GEE/GEC, serving as the resource speaker. The event brought together BA English Language students, faculty members, and visiting faculty and students from the Main Campus, with Dr. Aida V***a V. Un and Dr. Sunleigh C. Gador.
The session encouraged students to examine previous undergraduate studies, recognize research trends, identify gaps in existing literature, and develop research topics that are relevant, novel, and feasible.
The discussion was especially meaningful for the third-year students of BAEL 3-Pierce and BAEL 3-De Saussure, who are currently taking CC 3113 โ Language Research 1: Methodology under Miss Jelyn Arellano Pepito. Second-year BAEL students also participated through their English Discourse class, encouraged by Dr. Rowanne Mangompit.
One key takeaway stood out: finding a research topic is not only about asking, โHas this already been studied?โ It is also about asking, โWhat has not yet been explored?โ
By looking back at previous studies, students can discover gaps in participants, contexts, settings, variables, data sources, theoretical perspectives, and emerging developments.
Ultimately, the webinar reminded us that research is more than a graduation requirement. It is a journey that begins with a question, grows through curiosity, and leads toward discovering what remains unknown.
As Dr. Rogela A. Flores aptly put it:
โ๐๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฌ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ฃ๐ข๐ค๐ฌ๐ธ๐ข๐ณ๐ฅ ๐ต๐ฐ ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ท๐ฆ ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ๐ธ๐ข๐ณ๐ฅ.โ
Sometimes, finding where to go next begins with taking a closer look at what has already been explored.
