COEA studes secure 2 major wins at ARAW 2026

Two student research teams from the College of Engineering and Architecture (COEA) of Cagayan State University- Carig (CSU) secured major wins at the 16th Annual Research Awards (ARAW) 2026 held on August 20 at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in Sta. Mesa, Manila.

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) students Arnold E. Paclarin Jr., Jonel Angelo D. Vendiola and Vinzel M. Tablac, advised by Engr. Ian C. Pagulayan, emerged as champions in the Poster Presentation competition for the research project, โ€œMATA METER: Monitoring and Analysis of Transformer Acquired Parameters.โ€

Meanwhile, another BSEE team composed of Christian Jake P. Cabasag, Gani Luis B. Dacanay and Vince F. Sumagay, with their adviser, Engr. Michael B. Orpilla, placed first runner-up in the Commercialization Research category for the study, โ€œSmart Agri-gate with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) for Irrigation Canal Operations.โ€

Both teams were coached by Engr. Ericson L. Visaya.

The CSU teams competed against research projects submitted by public and private higher education institutions from across the Philippines.

The ARAW, organized by PUP in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), recognizes outstanding student research, innovative technologies and commercially viable engineering solutions.

The awards highlight the research and innovation capabilities of CSU engineering students and their mentors in developing solutions responsive to practical and emerging challenges.

CSU, PhilSA forge Partnership on Space Science and Technology Applications

Cagayan State University (CSU) and the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) strengthened their commitment to advancing space science and technology applications through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) under the PhilSA Integrated Network for Space-enabled Actions towards Sustainability (PINAS) on August 11, 2026, at the Philippine Space Agency in Quezon City.

CSU was among the 11 higher education institutions (HEIs) that signed the agreement with PhilSA, including Central Mindanao University, Aklan State University, Visayas State University, Western Philippines University, Marinduque State University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Palawan State University, Central Luzon State University, Caraga State University, and University of Antique.

Representing CSU in the signing was Engr. John Michael B. Casibang, MST, MSCE, University Dean of the College of Engineering and Architecture. PhilSA was represented by Dr. Gay Jane Perez, Director General of PhilSA. Engr. Denis F. Villorente, Deputy Director General for Space Operations, Infrastructure and Industry, and Mark Edwin A. Tupas, Dr. techn., Director of the Space Information Infrastructure Bureau, served as witnesses.

Under the agreement, CSU and PhilSA will collaborate on satellite remote sensing, geospatial information, research and development, capacity building, data sharing, and the development of methodologies and tools for environmental and natural resource mapping and monitoring.

The partnership was further supported by technical sessions on the second day of the activity, which focused on space data processing for land cover and agriculture using JuanMap and SAKA, as well as for natural resources and disaster applications through OpERA and DHARMA.

Other CSU representatives were Engr. Azereel C. Suor, faculty member of the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering program; and Engr. Regine R. Oandasan, faculty member of the Geodetic Engineering program of COEA.

CSU-COEA Students Join CSU-UTM Exchange Program in Malaysia

Two students from the College of Engineering and Architecture (COEA) of Cagayan State University-Carig joined the CSU-UTM Exchange Program on Multidisciplinary and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)-Oriented Research at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, from August 16 to 22, 2026.

Jeremy Jim G. Olalde and Jessie A. Quizzagan, third-year Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering students, were among the 23 participants in the program, composed of five faculty members and 18 students from Cagayan State University.

The program is designed to bring together students, researchers, and educators from CSU for academic, cultural, and research immersion activities, including lectures, research discussions, cultural showcases, campus and heritage visits, and networking sessions aimed at strengthening inter-university collaboration and SDG-oriented research initiatives.

BSABE Programs Achieve Compliance in PRC-PRB-ABE Monitoring

The Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (BSABE) programs of Cagayan State University (CSU)โ€“Carig and Sanchez Mira Campuses achieved compliance following an on-site inspection and monitoring conducted by the Professional Regulatory Board of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (PRB-ABE) on August 11, 2026, at the College of Engineering and Architecture (COEA), CSUโ€“Carig Campus.

The inspection was led by Hon. Sherwin O. Valdez, PRB-ABE Chairperson, together with Hon. Veasar Jobentino M. Tado, Board Member, and Mr. Jack A. Wassig, Supervising Professional Regulations Officer of the Professional Regulation Commission Region II.

The monitoring evaluated the BSABE programsโ€™ compliance with professional and technical standards under Republic Act No. 10915, or the Philippine Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Act of 2016, including requirements on faculty qualifications, facilities, instruction, research, and extension.

The BSABE programs were issued a Certificate of Compliance following the evaluation, affirming their adherence to the regulatory requirements and professional standards set by the PRC. The issuance of the Certificate of Compliance reflects the Universityโ€™s continued commitment to maintaining quality standards in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering education and ensuring compliance with national professional regulations.

CSUโ€“COEA Signs MOU with LGU Gonzaga to Strengthen Research and Extension Partnership

The College of Engineering and Architecture (COEA) of Cagayan State University (CSU) formalized a partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Gonzaga through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on July 30, 2026. The agreement was signed by Municipal Mayor Hon. Engr. Rellie Simbe Dalmaceda and OIC-University President Dr. Arthur G. Ibaรฑez to strengthen collaboration in research, extension, and community development.

During the signing, Mayor Dalmaceda expressed the LGU's support for the partnership and proposed additional activities that may be undertaken through the collaboration to address the needs of the Municipality of Gonzaga.

The MOU establishes a framework for long-term collaboration between CSU-COEA and the LGU of Gonzaga. Its objectives include fostering sustainable research and extension initiatives, applying innovative engineering and technological solutions to local challenges, enhancing LGU productivity through modern technologies, providing faculty and students with opportunities for real-world learning, and jointly implementing projects that contribute to the social, economic, and environmental development of the community.

The partnership reflects the shared commitment of CSU-COEA and the LGU of Gonzaga to leverage engineering expertise, research, and extension services in developing responsive and sustainable solutions that will benefit the local community.

Dr. Calagui Receives Inspiring Filipina Engineer Recognition at ICWES 20

Dr. Mary Jane C. Calagui, Department chair of the Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering program of the College of Engineering and Architecture (COEA), was recognized as one of the Inspiring Filipina Engineers during the 20th International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists (ICWES 20), held in conjunction with the 10th Philippine Women Engineers and Scientists Summit (PWESS 10) at Royce Hotel and Casino in Clark, Pampanga, on August 5, 2026.

The recognition was conferred in acknowledgment of her contributions to academic excellence and mentorship, curriculum development, industryโ€“academe partnerships, and student mentorship programs.
