𝗜𝗞𝗔-𝟯𝟳 𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗕𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗔𝗥𝗬𝗢 𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗔𝗚𝗣𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗪 𝗡𝗜 𝗣𝗘𝗗𝗥𝗢 𝗧. 𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗔

Noong Hulyo 13, 1989, pumanaw ang edukador na si Pedro T. Orata. Tinagurian siyang "Ama ng mga Barrio High School" at isang Ramon Magsaysay Awardee.

Isinilang siya noong Pebrero 27, 1899 sa Bactad, Urdaneta, Pangasinan kina Numeriana Tamesis-Orata at Candido Orata. Hindi naging madali ang buhay ng kanilang pamilya. Sa murang edad, nagtinda siya ng mga gulay at natutong magsaka.

Nag-aral siya sa Bactad bago naglakad ng ilang kilometro araw-araw upang ipagpatuloy ang kanyang pag-aaral sa Urdaneta at Binalonan. Nagtapos siya ng elementarya noong 1916. Matapos ang panandaliang pag-aaral sa Kolehiyo ng Agrikultura sa Los Baños, bumalik siya sa Pangasinan at nagtapos bilang class valedictorian sa Pangasinan Provincial High School sa Lingayen noong 1920.

Mula Urdaneta, ipinagpatuloy niya ang pag-aaral sa mas mataas na antas ng edukasyon sa Amerika. Ayon sa tala, naisakatuparan ito dahil sa kanyang kapatid. Nagtapos siya ng batsilyer sa edukasyon sa University of Illinois (Urbana) at masterado at doktorado sa Ohio State University. Sa kanyang disertasyon, pinabulaanan niya ang teorya ni Edward L. Thorndike. Dahil sa kahalagahan ng kanyang pag-aaral, inilathala ito ng unibersidad.

Bumalik siya sa Pilipinas noong 1927. Nagturo siya sa Bayambang Normal School (ngayon ay Pangasinan State University) ng isang semestre bago lumipat sa Philippine Normal School (ngayon ay Philippine Normal University) sa Maynila. Dahil sa kanyang husay, naging Asisstant Chief siya ng Research and Measurement Division ng Kawanihan ng Edukasyon. Naging pinakabatang Division Superintendent of Schools siya ng Isabela noong 1928 at nailipat sa Sorsogon mula 1931 hanggang 1934.

Matapos ang Ikalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig, itinalaga siya ng mga Amerikano bilang Direktor ng Edukasyon sa Lungsod Urdaneta. Sa ilalim niya. binuksan ang Urdaneta Community High School, ang kauna-unahang public high school sa bansa. Bilang tagapagtatag ng "barrio high school movement", naka-impluwensiya ito kay noo'y Pangulong Marcos, Sr. na hikayatin ang kongreso na magpasa ng batas bilang pagsuporta sa barrio high schools. Noong 1948, itinalaga si Orata bilang staff member ng UNESCO sa Paris, kung saan siya nanatili ng labindalawang taon. Naging dekano rin siya ng Graduate School ng Philippine Normal College mula 1960 hanggang 1964.

Pagsapit ng 1966, itinatag ni Orata ang Urdaneta Community College (ngayon ay Urdaneta City University), isa sa mga kauna-unahang community college sa bansa. Noong 2022, isang bust na may pananda ang inilagay sa loob ng unibersidad bilang pagkilala sa kanyang hindi matatawarang kontribusyon sa edukasyong Pilipino. Sa kasalukuyan, may institutional courses ang unibersidad upang dakilain ang buhay at mga gawa ni Orata sa pamamagitan ng Dr. Pedro T. Orata Nobility Program.
