How can we ensure safety in schools when violence continues to invade the spaces where students should learn, grow, and feel protected? According to the report, from June until August 2026, five school-related violent incidents were reported in different cities here in the Philippines: a stabbing incident in the City of General Trias on June 16, a shooting in Tacloban City on June 22, stabbing incidents in Cavite City in late June, a stabbing incident in Bacolod City on July 1, and a shooting in Zamboanga City on August 18.
Additionally, these are cases that raise a serious question, such as: can schools still be called safe even when violence is repeatedly at or around them? Educational institutions are supposed to be safe places to learn, and we need urgent action to keep all students, school personnel, teachers, and faculty members safe.
These incidents have raised controversy and hot debate in today's world; they show that school violence may happen in many places. But the repeated reports deserve more attention from school authorities, local government, and education officials.
In light of this, the incidents show why school safety must be treated as a serious responsibility. It is supposed to be our second home, yet what we inhabit is also what we are dominated by in the school with blood. It feels like our world shattered seeing our students in their second home full of blood; supposedly they are victimsโand innocent.
This shows why we need to take school safety seriously. School is supposed to be our second home, but often what we see there is overshadowed by violence and bloodshed. When violence enters the school environment, the purpose of education is disrupted. Hence, safety must be strengthened alongside academic programs.
The emotional effects must also receive attention. According to the EdCom, it calls for immediate support and psychological first aid for those affected. Such assistance is crucial because students and personnel who experience or witness violent incidents may need proper support after the event. Ignoring their emotional well-being could make recovery more challenging.
Above all, prevention must not cease, particularly regarding public statements. School authorities should strengthen safety procedures, improve threat reporting, coordinate quickly with local authorities, and ensure students have access to support services. These measures can help schools respond faster and prevent possible incidents from becoming more serious. Clear rules and consistent enforcement are necessary because, for student safety, we cannot depend on chance.
That is why the five incidents are a warning that school safety requires quick and concrete action. Education officials, school administrators, local authorities, and communities must strengthen security measures, provide support to those affected, and review policies that can prevent violence. Schools must remain places where students can study without fear of killing their own classmates. A second home should protect those inside it.
