The CatSU Statesman strongly condemns any form of bullying, harassment, mockery, and personal attacks directed toward candidates and members of the student body following the release of our recent election-related interview materials.

As a student publication, we recognize that healthy discourse and critical engagement are essential parts of a democratic and informed student electorate. However, criticism must never cross the line into hostility and ridicule. We urge the student community to uphold respect and accountability in all discussions, both online and offline.

At the same time, the publication remains steadfast in upholding editorial independence and the publicโ€™s right to information. The conduct and publication of candidate interviews form part of our mandate to inform students and provide a platform for candidates to present their perspectives on issues concerning the student body.

All participating candidates were informed of the nature and purpose of the interviews, and were given the opportunity to freely express their views, including the discretion to decline questions they were not comfortable answering.

The CatSU Statesman remains committed to ethical and responsible journalism anchored on truth, accountability, and service to the studentry.

Moving forward, the publication will also strengthen its internal protocols, including the furnishing of written consent to ensure clearer safeguards for both candidates and the publication.

We call on everyone to foster an environment where democratic participation is met with critical thinking and respect.
