In celebration of World Social Work Day 2026, the College of Social Work and Community Development of Western Mindanao State University gathered future practitioners, faculty, and visitors in a meaningful space of reflection and purposeβ€”grounded on the call to uplift lives, defend rights, and transform systems.

Serving as the highlight speaker, Ms. Bernadette A. Montebon, a Court Social Worker, shared a deeply moving message rooted in her experiences in the justice system. Through her words, she reminded everyone that Social Work is not defined by titles or recognition, but by the sincerity of one’s service to others. In the face of complex realities within the court setting, she emphasized that social workers stand as protectors of dignityβ€”ensuring that the voices of the vulnerable are heard, their rights defended, and their stories treated with compassion and respect.

In celebration of World Social Work Day 2026, Dr. Marcelina G. Carpizo, RSW, PASWI Zamboanga Chapter President, shared a deeply reflective and inspiring message that resonated with the true spirit of continuity in the Social Work profession.

She reminded everyone that Social Work is never confined to a position, a title, or a single chapter in life. Instead, it is a legacy carried forward by those who choose to continue the mission. As one generation steps back, another risesβ€”not to replace, but to sustain and strengthen the work that has already been started.

Her message highlighted the beauty of continuity in serviceβ€”that even beyond employment or formal roles, the values of Social Work remain alive. It is seen in every future practitioner who chooses compassion, every advocate who stands for justice, and every individual who carries the profession in their heart.

Dr. Carpizo emphasized that the true essence of being a social worker does not fade with timeβ€”it deepens. It lives on through mentorship, shared experiences, and the unwavering commitment to uplift lives, defend rights, and transform communities.

Not all stories are loud. Some are quietly carriedβ€”felt in long days, heavy moments, and small victories.

During the Social Work Month Celebration, Mr. Brainer S. Atilano, a 4th Year Social Work student, shared a testimony that spoke not just of his journey, but of the shared realities of every social work student.

β€œHealing does not end in the hospitalβ€”healing continues in the community.”

β€œResilience is everywhere… in every story of survival.”

"We are not here to save the world. We are here to walk with people through it. Because even if we cannot change everything, for someone, somewhere, we can change something and sometimes, that is everything."

Through his words, he challenged the usual perceptions of Social Workβ€”reminding everyone that the profession goes beyond assistance or intervention. It is about seeing the unseen, listening beyond words, and staying even when situations are uncertain and systems are imperfect.

He opened up about the realities of field practiceβ€”the limitations, the emotional weight, and the questions that come with it. Yet, within those struggles, he found meaning: that being a social worker is not about having all the answers, but about being present, being genuine, and choosing to care despite everything.

His testimony reflected a deeper truthβ€”that transformation is not only something we give, but something we also experience within ourselves.

Transform.”, the Giving of Pencils to the 4th year Social Work students stands as a meaningful symbol of support and encouragement as they prepare for one of the most significant milestones in their journeyβ€”the Social Work Licensure Examination. βœοΈβœ¨πŸ’š

More than a simple writing tool, each pencil carries a deeper significance. It represents readiness, perseverance, and hope as they enter a season of intensive preparationβ€”countless hours of review, reflection, and commitment to mastering the knowledge and values of the profession. It serves as a reminder that every stroke written during the board exam is grounded not only in what they have learned, but in the purpose they have chosen to pursue.

Each pencil also embodies the collective guidance, trust, and prayers of the CSWCD faculty and fellow Social Work studentsβ€”those who have taught, journeyed, and grown alongside them.
