This meaningful initiative is also conducted in partnership with La Liga Historia Zamboangueña – AdZU Chapter (LLHZ-AdZU) as part of our shared commitment to historical consciousness, civic engagement, and peacebuilding.

The forum seeks to provide a space for young people to remember history, ask difficult questions, and reflect on their role in protecting democracy, truth, and peace. Through dialogue and historical reflection, participants will be encouraged to critically engage with the lessons of the past and their implications for the present and future.

Representing the Social Sciences Department as one of the lecturers is Dr. Michael Vincent Caceres, whose presentation will provide historical and academic perspectives that will enrich the discussions and deepen participants' understanding of Martial Law and its continuing relevance to Philippine society.

This partnership reflects the University's mission of being Dedicated to Holistic Growth and Human Flourishing by forming socially conscious and responsible citizens, while also being United in Purpose and Action through collaboration among academic units, student organizations, and community partners. Likewise, the forum embodies the School of Liberal Arts' commitment to developing critical and reflective thinking, promoting social justice, and fostering respect for human dignity.

As we commemorate this important chapter in Philippine history, we invite students, faculty, and members of the Ateneo community to join us in meaningful conversations that strengthen our collective commitment to truth, peace, justice, and responsible citizenship.

𝗧𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 - A Reflection from GLP 2026 in Seoul, Korea.

A month ago, I embarked on a journey that changed and fueled my love for international relations and globalization. Through the Global Leadership Program 2026 at Sogang University in Seoul, South Korea, I was given the opportunity to experience a country beyond what books, lectures, and screens could ever show me.

In Seoul, I witnessed the parallel realities of a city, the bustling streets and buildings that seem to reach the sky, yet, I also found the calmness of nature and the serenity of far-flung villages. It reminded me that globalization does not erase the quiet and intimate parts of a place, instead, it allows us to see how different realities can exist and connect within the same world.

I also learned deeply about Korea’s history, particularly its sincerity and enduring hope for unification, to make ends meet, look beyond separation, and imagine a future where division no longer define its people. I came to appreciate a history that is carefully preserved, but also one that can only truly be understood through the stories, places, and people you encounter when you are there.

Along the way, I also discovered the unique histories and experiences of the countries my friends and acquaintances came from, realizing that every person carries a piece of a much larger world. Each and every individual carried more than their dreams, they carried their heritage and the culture that shaped who they are.

GLP 2026 was an eye-opener. It made me realize that the future is not some distant place waiting to be reached, it already exists in the world we live in today, filled with opportunities to connect, understand, and improve.

More than an academic experience, the program strengthened my belief that globalization can be a force for meaningful connection, and that international studies is ultimately about seeing the world where it is, understanding it for what it is, and helping make it a more connected and holistic place.

The Social Sciences Department recently concluded its 3rd Departmental Meeting, bringing together faculty members to discuss important academic and administrative matters concerning the Department.

Among the key agenda items were the review of the Department's curricular offerings and the planning and coordination of upcoming academic, commemorative, research, and student development activities for the academic year. The discussions provided an opportunity for faculty members to evaluate existing programs, identify areas for improvement, and ensure that our curricular initiatives remain responsive to the needs of our students and the changing demands of society.

The meeting likewise reinforced the Department's commitment to the mission of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University by remaining United in Purpose and Action through collaborative planning and decision-making, while continuing to be Dedicated to Holistic Growth and Human Flourishing through programs that form critical, socially responsible, and globally engaged learners.

In the spirit of the School of Liberal Arts, the Department remains committed to the integrative transformation of persons through critical and reflective thinking, respect for human dignity and diversity, and the pursuit of scholarship that contributes to the betterment of society.

The Social Sciences Department is pleased to announce the release of the Department Chairperson’s Memorandum formally appointing the Thesis Advisers and Panel Members for School Year 2026–2027.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the faculty members who have generously accepted the responsibility of serving as advisers and panelists. Through their expertise, mentorship, and commitment to scholarship, they will guide our students in producing meaningful research that contributes to the growing body of knowledge within our University and beyond.

We likewise express our gratitude to Dr. Michael Vincent Caceres, Thesis Coordinator, for facilitating the selection and coordination process and for his continued dedication to strengthening the Department’s research program.

🎓 𝗔𝗗𝗩𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗗𝗨𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗛 𝗜𝗡 𝗛𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬

The Social Sciences Department earlier today, September 9, 2026, had the privilege of witnessing the presentation of concept paper proposals by two students of the Master of Arts in History Program from the Province of Sulu.

Ms. Jenevieve Cagatin presented her proposal entitled, “Dominican Sisters in Sulu Archipelago (circa 1950–1970): Navigating the Periphery on Apostolic Mission in the Moroland,” while Mr. Sali Alawi proposed, “The Province of Sulu under the 1976 Tripoli Agreement: The Political and Socio-Economic Conditions during the Implementation Period, 1976–1986.”

Both studies explore important yet understudied aspects of the history of Sulu and the broader Southern Philippines, contributing to a deeper understanding of the region’s religious, political, and socio-economic experiences.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Dr. Joseph Climaco, Graduate Studies Program Coordinator, for the opportunity to involve members of our faculty in this important academic exercise. We likewise commend our faculty panelists—Dr. Ma. Christina A. Cañones, Dr. Michael Vincent Caceres, and Mr. Rovic John F. Eslao, Chairperson of the Social Sciences Department—for sharing their expertise and providing valuable insights to strengthen the proposed studies.

As the students move forward in their research journey, they will now begin preparing for the second phase of their work—the development of their full research proposals—in anticipation of their Final Proposal Defense, which is scheduled within the current semester.

The Department congratulates the presenters on reaching this milestone and looks forward to the valuable contributions their research will make to the historiography of Sulu, Mindanao, and the Philippines.

🌏 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀

On September 4, 2026, the Social Sciences Department met with the Global Paths : Internationalization Office - GPIO to discuss preparations for the upcoming international exposure trip to Vietnam of the third-year students of the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies program. The activity forms part of the second-semester course INTS-SPECT: Special Topics in International Studies (with International Exposure), which seeks to enrich students' understanding of international relations, cultures, and global issues through firsthand learning experiences beyond the classroom.

The meeting focused on initial plans, coordination, and possible arrangements to ensure a meaningful and transformative international exposure program aligned with the goals of the International Studies curriculum and the University's commitment to global engagement.

The Department extends its sincere gratitude to Br. Jeffrey U. Pioquinto, SJ, instructor of INTS-SPECT, and Ms. Camille Lin Hua of the Global Paths: Internationalization Office for their support and collaboration in making this initiative possible.

We also thank Mr. Abdulquddus M. Arasid, Prime Minister of the International Studies Organization of Ateneo (ISOA), and Ms. Karla Marie Aballe, ISOA Secretary-General, for joining the meeting and representing the student body in the planning process.

The Contemporary World (CONWOR) teachers, led by Mr. Shirven John Viloria, gathered on July 22, 2026 for a meaningful session of kumustahan, orientation, and coordination among faculty members handling the course.

The gathering provided an opportunity for the CONWOR teaching team to reconnect, share insights and experiences, clarify expectations, and coordinate approaches toward the effective delivery of the subject across classes and sections. Such collaborative efforts help ensure consistency, responsiveness, and quality in our students' learning experiences.

The Social Sciences Department extends its sincere appreciation to Mr. Viloria and the entire CONWOR team for their continued dedication to strengthening the delivery of our courses and ensuring quality education for our students.
