ADZU-SOM Blesses Newly Renovated Facilities, Reaffirms Commitment to Quality Medical Education

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University School of Medicine (ADZU-SOM) marked a significant milestone on May 2, 2025, with the blessing of its newly renovated infrastructure facilities. The event, led by Fr. Tex Paurom and graced by University President Fr. Ernald Andal, celebrated the completion of long-overdue repairs and upgrades aimed at creating more conducive, functional, and dignified learning environments for students, faculty, and staff.

Prompted by the 2019 PAASCU recommendations, the renovations went beyond mere compliance. They reflect ADZU-SOM’s enduring commitment to academic excellence, student well-being, and the core Ignatian value of cura personalis—care for the whole person. Upgraded classrooms, consultation rooms, faculty spaces, restrooms, and safety exits are now better aligned with the school's mission to form competent, compassionate, and socially accountable physicians.

The administration extends its deep gratitude to the ADZU leadership, Finance Office, and Physical Plant Office for their unwavering support, and to every member of the community who contributed to the effort. With humility and hope, ADZU-SOM continues to move forward—strengthened not just by new walls, but by a renewed sense of purpose and shared responsibility.

Empowering Future Leaders for Healthier Communities!

Fulfilling ADZU-SOM's mission to address health disparities in Western Mindanao and beyond, Ateneo de Zamboanga University School of Medicine has launched an inspiring new program tailored to our Level 4 medical students—the Bridging Leadership Workshop!

Last October 29 to 30, 2024, the Level 4 students participated in a two-day program designed to strengthen their skills and commitment as future health advocates! This workshop was an incredible opportunity for students to dive into the “Bridging Leadership” process, an approach that emphasizes ownership, co-ownership, and co-creation—values that are essential for making lasting changes in community health.

Through hands-on activities, our future doctors explored key topics like systems thinking, stakeholder collaboration, and advocacy skills. They learned the importance of seeing beyond the symptoms and understanding the bigger picture that affects community health. By developing their skills in dialogue and strategic planning, they’re now ready to work side-by-side with local partners to create sustainable solutions.

With guidance from the Social Development Office and our dedicated Bridging Leaders Faculty, students left the workshop empowered and ready to take on their 10-month community immersion. This experience will be their chance to put their new skills into action as they work to address health disparities and promote equitable access to healthcare in underserved communities across Western Mindanao. 🌏💙

We’re proud of our future leaders, equipped not just to heal but to advocate, collaborate, and create healthier, more resilient communities.

Revolutionizing Healthcare for the Underserved
On November 4, 2024, at the Unilab Bayanihan Center, Ateneo de Zamboanga University School of Medicine (ADZUSOM) had the privilege of witnessing a remarkable leap forward in healthcare technology: the demonstration of the DigiHealthATM. In partnership with Unilab and Tzu Chi Foundation, this automated telehealth machine promises to transform health service delivery, beginning with two pilot locations—Zamboanga City through ADZUSOM and Romblon through the Odiongan LGU.
The DigiHealthATM is a game-changer for underserved communities, offering a compact, user-friendly system that performs onsite examinations and medical surveillance using clinical-grade, FDA-registered devices. Its unique features, such as teleconsultation, online prescriptions, and a built-in Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, empower even non-medical personnel to facilitate patient care. Moreover, its operation without the need for internet or electricity makes it a lifeline for remote areas.
We at ADZUSOM are honored to collaborate with the Tzu Chi Foundation Zamboanga Liaison Office to maximize the impact of this incredible technology. This collaboration reflects our shared mission: bringing healthcare innovations to those who need them most and bridging the gaps in health equity.
Our deepest thanks go to Unilab Executive Ms. Claire Papa and to the Unilab family for their visionary support, and to our steadfast partner, Tzu Chi Foundation Vice CEO Dr. Anton Mari H. Lim, for continuously uplifting marginalized communities.
We look forward to many more collaborations that harness technology and compassion to serve our people better.
Here's to a future where healthcare innovations pave the way for healthier, more equitable communities! 🤝💙✨

The 3SK Project is an initiative focused on promoting the health and well-being of public school teachers, acknowledging the unique challenges they face in managing chronic health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Teachers play a vital role in shaping the future of our children, and ensuring their health is paramount. By prioritizing teachers' well-being, we aim to create safer, healthier learning environments that directly benefit our students’ educational experiences.

Present during the signing ceremony were the following distinguished partners who share our vision for healthier schools. Our gratitude extends to:

Strengthening Global Ties for Medical Excellence! 🌏

Ateneo de Zamboanga University School of Medicine (ADZU-SOM) is excited to share another major milestone in its pursuit of global collaboration and innovation in medical education!

Recently, ADZU-SOM Dean, Dr. Jaybee D. Bazan, together with esteemed faculty members Dr. Elery Ivan Apolinario and Dr. Perlas Lorenzo, embarked on a remarkable visit to Tzu Chi University School of Medicine in Hualien, Taiwan. Joining them was ADZU-SOM alumnus and active Tzu Chi Volunteer, Dr. Rashid Hamis. The delegation received a warm and heartfelt welcome from Tzu Chi University President Ingrid Y. Liu, Dean Chen Tsung-Ying, and Vice Dean Shie Kun-Ruey. They were also accompanied by Dr. Anton Lim, Deputy CEO of the Tzu Chi Foundation Philippines, and the dedicated nurses and staff from Tzu Chi Eye Center at Zamboanga City Medical Center.

This visit builds on the momentous signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between ADZU-SOM and Tzu Chi University in August 2024, solidifying an international partnership that promises to broaden the scope and impact of both institutions. Thanks to the unwavering support of Tzu Chi Foundation Philippines, this collaboration unlocks incredible opportunities for students, faculty, and the wider academic community.

Exciting prospects lie ahead—academic and cultural exchanges, faculty exchange programs, overseas volunteer services, internships, visiting professor initiatives, and the creation of a professional learning community. These initiatives will not only elevate the educational experience for ADZU-SOM students but also foster deeper connections with the global medical community.
The potential for shared growth, learning, and innovation between both institutions is boundless.

This partnership underscores ADZU-SOM’s commitment to providing a world-class medical education anchored in service, compassion, and social responsibility. It strengthens our mission to shape healthcare professionals who are not only highly skilled but also deeply attuned to the needs of their communities, both locally and globally.

A heartfelt thanks to Dr. Anton Lim and the entire Tzu Chi community for making this collaboration possible. To our esteemed partners at Tzu Chi University, we look forward to this exciting journey of growth and learning together! 🌟

🌟 Prima Vita Salutaris - A Journey of Community Service and Leadership! 🌟

On September 14, 2024, the Multi-Purpose Convention Center at the FANCC of Fr. Willam H. Kreutz Ateneo de Zamboanga University Tumaga Campus came alive with the celebration of the Community Recognition Ceremony. This special event honored our Level 4 students for their exceptional dedication to community health over the past four years in their adopted barangays: Bungiao, Dulian, Lanzones, Lamisahan, Malagutay, Pasobolong, and Tulungatung. 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

During their first three years, these future doctors worked closely with community volunteers—developing comprehensive health plans, gathering and analyzing data, and presenting their findings to local leaders. This intensive process culminated in their fourth year with the creation of a comprehensive Community Health Plan, a testament to their deep commitment to health equity and service. These plans are designed to improve the long-term health outcomes in these communities. 🏥💡

The ceremony was graced by the presence of Fr. Richard Ella, who awarded special citations to outstanding students for their hard work and dedication. We were also deeply inspired by our esteemed guest speaker, Dr. Adnilre Drapiza-Verzon, an alumna from the Class of 2004 and the current Municipal Health Officer of Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay. She shared her incredible journey in community health, motivating everyone in attendance. 🗣️💙

The celebration was attended by faculty, staff, community coordinators, preceptors, parents, and family members, as well as the community leaders from the seven barangays, all gathered to witness and support the achievements of these remarkable students. 🙌

In addition to recognizing the students' accomplishments, the event marked a significant milestone in their medical journey: their transition into the hospital internship year, the final step toward their MD-MPH graduation. 🎓

One of the ceremony's most meaningful moments was the Pinning Ceremony, led by Dr. Jennifer Araneta, the Level 5 COME Internship Coordinator. The pinning officially signified their readiness to take on their next role as interns in hospitals and continue their journey of service and learning. 🎖️💪

Here’s to the future of compassionate leadership in healthcare! 🫶✨

🎉 A Day of Growth at ADZUSOM’s General Faculty Assembly! 🎉

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University School of Medicine (ADZUSOM) held its Grand Faculty Assembly, bringing together faculty members for a day of inspiration and collaboration. The event was a welcome opportunity for faculty to reconnect and focus on the school’s vision and mission.

The assembly began with a warm welcome to University President, Fr. Guilrey Anthony “Ernald” Andal, who joined the ADZUSOM family for the first time. Fr. Andal impressed everyone with his wisdom on his talk on Social Justice which resonated deeply with the assembly’s theme: “Health Equity and Justice through Relevant Medical Education.” This theme is central to ADZUSOM’s mission, shaping its curriculum and approach to medical education. Social justice is embedded in every aspect of the school’s work, from teaching and mentoring to clinical training. The goal is to ensure that ADZUSOM graduates are not only skilled healthcare providers but also advocates for the underserved.

Dr. Norvie Jalani, a member of the Research Committee, presented the summary of the research papers conducted by the students of ADZUSOM, and set the direction of the future researches of the school.

In the second part of the assembly, attention turned to the upcoming PAASCU Accreditation. ADZUSOM is proud to be a Level 2 PAASCU Accredited Medical School and is now aiming for Level 3 status. Achieving this accreditation is a testament to the quality and relevance of the education provided and underscores the school’s commitment to excellence.

Dr. Evelyn Chavez, Director of the ADZU Quality Assurance Strategic Management Office (QASMO), guided the faculty through the accreditation process, emphasizing the importance of teamwork.
There was a palpable sense of purpose and momentum in the room. The faculty left not only with a clearer vision but also with a renewed commitment to the ideals that define ADZUSOM. They are ready to push boundaries, set higher standards, and continue making a profound impact on the future of medical education.
