Reflecting the Philippines Health Realities and
Disparities through the eyes
of a 4th year medical student

I am now in my 4th year of medical studies and currently deployed in a rural municipality for our community exposure. As I am nearing the end of my fourth year in medical school, I often get caught with the question “Is this really what I want to do for the rest of my life?”

Last year, our class of 48 student doctors completed our clinical clerkship rotation. The 6-months hospital clinical exposure in a public hospital was not the smoothest easiest one. No matter how much a government medical institution strives to provide the best healthcare there is for its patients, it is constrained to the reality of inadequate budget allocation for health, from the government. I grew upset with the things I couldn't alter, like the status of our nation's healthcare system.
To become a doctor does not only mean treating patients, it also means providing healthcare to the communities and the nation.

This scares me as I do not know exactly what the future holds. I do not know if I will be able to bring in significant change to already deficient and defective healthcare system in our country.

In November 2022 immediately after our clerkship rotation, we were deployed in a far-flung area of a municipality here in Mindanao for our 10 months community exposure. The longer I stayed in this community, the more I see how people suffer.

I was distraught knowing some people die not being able to have themselves seen by a doctor. I see malnourished mothers with malnourished children.
I hear stories of hypertensive individuals treating their nape pain with a bottle of b**r. People not only deserve health care but also health education.

I reassessed myself “do I really want this?” Or rather “Can I really do this?” I know I am not brave enough, nor smart enough or good enough to solve this glaring health reality. What I know then was that I can’t just sit back and wait for circumstances to unfold. The least I can do to bridge the disparity is to help.

Closing in to the end of our community exposure, I, together with my classmates, have been able to accomplish a lot for the people in our adopted community. Aside from rendering health services, we have been able to deliver countless of health education engagements addressing the roots of our community's major healthcare problems.

I am not the one to stand defeated, I will not abandon this fight and commitment to public health.

I would rather choose to do small but meaningful contributions than wait for what happens next.

Knowing that the Ateneo de Zamboanga University School of Medicine and my benefactor are behind this journey, assures me that the contributions I made however small will go a long way for the under served, underrepresented and marginalized population in our country.

With this thought in mind, I bring forward the mission and vision of our school which is to help solve the health problems of Southwestern Mindanao and beyond.

Social Accountability is defined by World Health Organization as the "obligation of medical schools to direct their education, research and service activities towards addressing the priority health concerns of the community, region and/or the nation".

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University School of Medicine was designed as a health development project for the region, to improve the health status of the people, to improve availability of health resources, and the well-being of the community that we serve.

Let us take you with us to this journey.
