Social Awareness and Community Service Involvement Office - AdZU Official page of SACSI Office. The acronym “SACSI” in the Filipino language means “witness”. This is an apt description of what the office is all about.

The office serves as a witness to the social realities of the larger society; and being so, convey the facts from the University of Life to the Ateneo academe to develop a sense of social commitment among the students, faculty and staff of our community for a just, humane and God-inspired society. SACSI stands for Social Awareness and Community Service Involvement. This is the office within the university that serves as the link between the school and the outside communities to complement theories learned in the classroom with the actual realities of life. As the social involvement arm of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University, it is guided by the principles of academic excellence, socio-political maturity, and spiritual growth. Its primary concern is the holistic formation of the students – to be Men and Women of God, for others.

54 years ago, Martial Law was declared in the Philippines under President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. It marked a period of authoritarian rule characterized by the restriction of civil liberties, censorship, arrests, detention, and widespread human rights violations.

Today, we remember the victims and survivors whose stories shaped our nation’s history. May we continue to learn from the past, uphold human rights, and value the freedoms that Filipinos fought to protect.

One of the activities under CAMINO DE PAZ 2026: Walking the Path of Peace 🕊️

Yesterday, September 17, the Ateneo community gathered for an afternoon of learning and reflection on the West Philippine Sea — an awareness session encouraging informed and responsible conversations on the issues that affect our nation, our communities, and our shared future.

From the unveiling of our West Philippine Sea informative visual material — led by Fr. Ernald Andal — to a firsthand talk from our resource speaker, Ms. Edilyn Joy D. Uson, JD, CivHr. to a heartfelt video message from fisherfolk advocate Roberto 'Ta Dodoy' Ballon — this activity reminded us that peace also means safeguarding what is rightfully ours.

MAR DE PAZ was made possible through the partnership of the Social Awareness and Community Service Involvement (SACSI), and the Freshmen Formation Program (FFP). Our thanks to both offices for mobilizing our students and standing with us in this advocacy — and to everyone who paused, listened, and chose to learn something new.

Because to walk the path of peace is also to stand for justice, for truth, and for the seas that sustain our people.

Meaningful community engagement begins with intentional dialogue and shared purpose. As part of our continuous commitment to embedding authentic experiential learning into the university curriculum, the Social Awareness and Community Service Involvement (SACSI) Office continues to collaborate with key academic leaders to align our programs with community needs.
The Service Learning Program provides a systematic framework designed to connect classroom concepts directly with real-world applications, fostering deep social responsibility alongside technical excellence.

On September 14, 2026, SACSI Director Mr. Kevin Jimera and SLP Program Officer Ms. Arielah Jean Supe met with College of Nursing leaders Mrs. Eva Relao, Chairperson of Level 3 COPAR, and Mrs. Elsie Miguel, Level 3 RLE Coordinator for COPAR.

This consultation meeting focused on integrating the Service Learning Program within Community Health Nursing courses, establishing a collaborative framework where Nursing manages technical health interventions, while SACSI facilitates post-activity reflection sessions to help students deeply process their human experiences.

Through this partnership, both offices aim to establish a seamless implementation process that enhances student reflection, minimizes administrative workload, and ensures centralized documentation for accreditation standards.

Guided by our AdZU Mission, in companionship, we are United in Purpose and Action: we collaborate, adapt, and strive for institutional excellence and meaningful community engagements, always laboring for the greater glory of God.
This joint effort actively supports SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being by advancing community health solutions, SDG 4: Quality Education through integrated experiential learning, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by building strong institutional collaborations.

Laying the groundwork for broader horizons and intercultural dialogue, the Social Awareness and Community Service Involvement (SACSI) Office recently convened with the leadership of the School of Liberal Arts (SLA) for a series of consultative and preparatory discussions on the upcoming exchange program implementation.

Held to align administrative, academic, and formative priorities, the meeting brought together key representatives from both units: SACSI Director Mr. Kevin Roy Jimera, alongside Program Officers Ms. Razma Degusman-Golles and Mr. Daryl Jimeno, engaged in rich dialogue with the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts, Dr. Ailyn Sabdilon-Absara, PhD, RPsy, RPm, and the Chair of the Philosophy Department, Mr. Joel Porras.

These joint consultations focused on refining the program’s framework, ensuring that the incoming exchange implementation seamlessly blends academic rigor, philosophical reflection, and active community immersion. By carefully mapping out logistics and learning objectives, both offices are working to guarantee that the exchange offers participants a deeply transformative experience rooted in ethical engagement and global awareness.

This collaborative venture directly advances the core goals of AdZU. By being Zealous in Charting Global Paths, the initiative ensures that instruction and student formation resonate beyond local shores, preparing learners to navigate and respond to evolving global realities. Through being United in Purpose and Action, SACSI and SLA demonstrate institutional synergy and academic collaboration to deliver excellence. Furthermore, by Advancing Ignatian Spirituality, the exchange aims to form open-minded, discerning individuals committed to being persons for and with others.

On a global scale, these preparations align with SDG 4: Quality Education, by fostering inclusive, high-impact, and global learning opportunities, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, by building strong inter-departmental synergies to drive sustainable educational initiatives.

As consultations continue, SACSI and SLA remain dedicated to creating meaningful pathways where exchange learners encounter new perspectives, engage deeply with communities, and embody empowered global citizenship.

On 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟔, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, a meaningful milestone was marked at the 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭’𝐬 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐦 as the Social Awareness and Community Service Involvement (SACSI) Office, through the National Service Training Program (NSTP), formally forged a partnership through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing between Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) and the Department of Education (DepEd) for the implementation of the NSTP Literacy Training Service (NSTP-LTS).

The ceremony was led by AdZU President 𝐅𝐫. 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐲 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐲 𝐌. 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐥, 𝐒𝐉, and Assistant Schools Division Superintendent 𝐃𝐫. 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐃. 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨 (representing Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Roy C. Tuballa). Standing as official witnesses to the agreement were 𝐃𝐫. 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐃. 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐫 and 𝐌𝐫. 𝐑𝐲𝐚𝐧 𝐌. 𝐍𝐢𝐦𝐟𝐚 𝐂. 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐲 and 𝐌𝐬. 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐥 𝐘𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐧.

This institutional collaboration aims to deploy AdZU NSTP-LTS student volunteers to deliver literacy, and values-formation programs, directly accompanying young learners and supporting basic education initiatives in local partner schools. Through this collaboration, NSTP students will actively serve as literacy tutors and facilitators in community-based learning sessions.

Rooted in the Ateneo de Zamboanga University mission of being "𝐃𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠" and "𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧," alongside the SACSI call to "𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐦, 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐛𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐠𝐢, 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢-𝐒𝐀𝐂𝐒𝐈," this partnership reinforces our shared commitment to accessible education, active citizenship, and community development.

This effort proudly aligns with multiple Sustainable Development Goals by ensuring inclusive, equitable, and quality education for young learners (𝐒𝐃𝐆 𝟒: 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧), reducing educational gaps in underserved communities (𝐒𝐃𝐆 𝟏𝟎: 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬), and strengthening multi-sectoral partnerships between higher education institutions and public basic education sectors (𝐒𝐃𝐆 𝟏𝟕: 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬).
