Study Launch & Roundtable Consultative Session on Pakistan’s Solar–Storage Transition: Way Forward on Battery Demand, Market Readiness and Policy Action
On 18 August 2026, USPCAS-E, NUST convened a consultative session and policy roundtable to officially launch the landmark study, "Assessing and Predicting the Growing Demand of Batteries for Solar PV Systems in Pakistan." Conducted by Dr. Nadia Shahzad (PI) and her research team, the session addressed Pakistan's rapidly expanding solar and battery-storage market, focusing on the growth of lithium-ion technology over lead-acid options driven by rising tariffs, exchange-rate pressures, and load-shedding.
The panel featured Ms. Rabia Babar (Renewables First), Mr. Iftikhar ul Islam (Atlas Battery Limited), Mr. Imtiaz Ahmad (ISMO), Mr. Sajjad Hussain Malik (SCI), Prof. Dr. Naseem Iqbal (USPCAS-E, NUST), and Dr. Ayaz Mehmood (Sky Bridges).
Discussions highlighted critical grid challenges like reverse power flows, daytime surpluses, and evening demand ramps (the duck curve), requiring strategic BESS deployment across consumer, DISCO, and transmission tiers. The session also addressed severe data gaps regarding import volumes, capacity ratings, and geographic distribution, highlighting the need for data triangulation indulging with development sector organizations and integration with national surveys like the PSLM. Furthermore, participants examined market issues including unverified low-cost battery brands lacking safety standards, high capital costs hindering rural adoption, and the long-term environmental risks posed by the absence of formal hazardous waste and recycling frameworks.

The U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Energy (USPCAS-E), NUST is organizing a consultative session on the growing demand for battery storage in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s rapid shift toward solar is driving a growing need for battery storage. The session will bring together policymakers, researchers, industry experts, solar and battery companies, and other stakeholders to discuss where Pakistan’s battery storage market is heading and what is needed for its sustainable growth.

The discussion will focus on:

* Growing demand for batteries with solar PV systems
* Future BESS demand and market opportunities
* Lithium-ion and lead-acid battery technologies
* Battery use for residential backup, commercial and industrial peak shaving, telecom and agriculture

The U.S.-Pakistan Centre for Advanced Studies in Energy at NUST, through the Department of Electrical Power Engineering, is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of Program 4: Energy Conservation, Efficiency and Practical Optimization. This marked the fourth and final module of the Flagship Internship Series of the institution, held from 27th to 30th July 2026. The program received a remarkably strong response from students across Pakistan, underscoring the growing interest in sustainable energy management, efficiency frameworks, and optimization techniques essential for building a reliable and economical energy future.

The internship was structured to provide participants with deep conceptual insights alongside practical exposure to energy conservation strategies, energy efficiency assessments, electrical power management, real-time smart monitoring, and sustainable engineering practices. Through expert lectures integrated with hands-on laboratory activities, students effectively bridged classroom concepts with real-world technical applications. Practical training sessions were conducted in the specialized facilities of the department, including the Smart Grid Laboratory under the direction of Dr. Saeed Iqbal, the Energy Conversion Lab under the supervision of Engr. Shoukat Nawaz, and the High Voltage Lab guided by Mr. Shehryar. Technical support and lab demonstrations throughout the module were facilitated by Trainer Technologist Mr. Qamar-ud-Din.

The overall accomplishment of this final phase was driven by the collaborative efforts of faculty members, researchers, and technical staff. Strategic oversight was provided by the designated Focal Persons, Dr. Muhammad Yousif and Ms. Manal Arshad, under the departmental leadership of Dr. Syed Ali Abbas Kazmi, Head of the Department of Electrical Power Engineering. Operational ex*****on and logistical management throughout the program were spearheaded by the dedicated team of volunteers.

The closing and certificate distribution ceremony was honored by the presence of Dr. Adeel Waqas, Principal of USPCAS-E, who served as the Chief Guest and shared inspiring thoughts with the graduating cohort. The department deeply appreciates his continuous leadership and support, which play a vital role in advancing the academic and outreach mission of the center. With all four phases of the Flagship Summer Internship Program 2026 now successfully completed, USPCAS-E reaffirms its dedication to delivering high-caliber technical training and research exposure, preparing the next generation of professionals to lead in the global energy transition.

Driving Pakistan's Electric Mobility Transition: Policy, Grid Integration, and Green Financing

The U.S.-Pakistan Centre for Advanced Studies in Energy at NUST, in collaboration with Indus Consortium and the National Energy Academic Network (NEAN), successfully hosted the national conference "Driving the EV Transition: Synergizing Policy, Grid, and Green Financing" in Islamabad. The event commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Adeel Waqas, Professor and Principal of USPCAS-E, who highlighted the macroeconomic necessity of transitioning to clean electric transport.

The conference featured insightful presentations delivered by Ms. Rabia Babar and Dr. Hassan Abdullah Khalid, setting the stage for three core panel sessions focused on industry infrastructure, economic drivers, and regulatory planning. The first session, moderated by Ms. Rabia Babar from Renewables First, included panelists Dr. Aazir Anwar Khan from the University of Lahore, Mr. Saadullah Ejaz from Atlas Honda, Mr. Shuja-ul-Haq Siddiqui from PAAPAM, and Ms. Mehrosh Fatima from NEECA. The second session, moderated by Mr. Shahid Jilani from Indus Consortium, featured Dr. Khalid Waleed of SDPI, Ms. Shaheen Akhtar from the State Bank of Pakistan, Dr. Huzaifa Rauf from LUMS, and Mr. Syed Yasir Husain from CAC. The final session, moderated by Mr. Ubaid Ur Rehman Zia from SDPI, brought together Mr. Hassan Mian from YES Electromotive, Dr. Attique Ur Rehman from the Ministry of Planning, Mr. Bilawal Suhag from FPCCI, and Dr. Kaleem Ullah from UET Peshawar.

Each thematic session was followed by an interactive Q&A segment, allowing participants to question the panelists directly on manufacturing localization, credit risk management under green banking frameworks, and AI-driven smart charging for national grid stability. At the conclusion of each session, shields of appreciation were presented to the respective panelists and moderators to honor their insights. Alongside the policy discussions, the event hosted a technology exhibition featuring YES Electromotive, Hybrid EV Engineering, Smart Innovations, Systec Technologies, AGECO, and ezBike. These companies displayed locally assembled electric vehicles, fast-charging hardware, custom battery management systems, and retrofitting conversion kits.

We thank the Indus Consortium team and extend special recognition to Mr. Majid Bilal Khan for their invaluable partnership in organizing this conference. The conference officially concluded with a vote of thanks and closing remarks by Dr. Majid Ali.

A Historic Milestone for Energy Education in Pakistan!

The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) successfully conducted the Zero Visit of the newly proposed Bachelor of Engineering in Energy (BE Energy) program at the U.S.-Pakistan Centre for Advanced Studies in Energy at NUST on 16 April 2026 and granted the green signal for its launch starting Fall 2026.

The visit commenced with an overview of USPCAS-E by the Principal, highlighting the Centre’s history, research strengths, ongoing projects, and contributions to Pakistan’s energy sector. This was followed by a comprehensive presentation by the Head of the Department of Energy Systems Engineering on the BE Energy program, including its curriculum, Outcome-Based Education (OBE) framework, and teaching laboratory infrastructure.

The PEC team also met with the Pro-Rector Academics in the presence of senior NUST leadership, including representatives from Finance, Quality Assurance, Registrar Office, and Academics Directorate. A detailed briefing was provided on NUST’s academic excellence, international rankings, student facilities, and institutional support systems.

During the visit, the PEC delegation toured the Main Library, classrooms, and newly established teaching laboratories, including:
Engineering Mechanics Lab
Fluid Mechanics Lab
Heat & Mass Transfer Lab
Electrical Circuit & Network Analysis Lab
Instrumentation & Measurements Lab

The team also held a dedicated interaction session with the faculty members of USPCAS-E. The PEC team expressed satisfaction with the available infrastructure, academic resources, faculty strength, laboratory facilities, and institutional support at both USPCAS-E and NUST, paving the way for the launch of this emerging engineering discipline. The BE Energy program is the first undergraduate engineering program dedicated specifically to Energy Engineering in the Federal Capital of Pakistan.
