REGISTRATION OPEN FOR THE UN COMPREHENSIVE PROTECTION OF CIVILIANS COURSE (UNCPOCC-16) 2026

The Department of Peace Operations (DPO) and the Department of Field Support (DFS) have devoted significant attention to improving performance in this area by: Working with peace operations to develop a conceptual framework for POC; supporting the peace operations to develop comprehensive POC strategies, which assists them in harnessing all available resources for the task; and developing protection of civilians training courses targeted at personnel about to deploy, as well as those already working in peace operations. These courses are aimed at military, police and civilian personnel. Centre for International Peace & Stability (CIPS) is an internationally recognized and UN certified premier institution providing training courses on various aspects of peacekeeping, including POC. The POC course is based on the training modules developed by the United Nations Integrated Training Service (UNITS). The POC training materials are intended to provide all peacekeeping personnel (military, police/civil armed forces and civilians) with a shared understanding of the basic principles, guidelines and policies of UN peacekeeping concerning the protection of civilians to ensure that UN peace operations can tackle their protection functions effectively.

Duration: 11 – 22 May, 2026

Timings: 9 am to 4:30 pm (Monday - Friday)

CIPS hosted a guest lecture on “Current Challenges in Peacebuilding and Peacekeeping Missions: A Scholarly Perspective” on 4 February 2026.

The lecture was delivered by Dr. Katja Mielke, Senior Researcher at the Bonn International Centre for Conflict Studies (BICC), who provided a rigorous and insightful analysis of contemporary peacebuilding and peacekeeping dynamics, with particular reference to conflict regions including Afghanistan.

The 7th CIPS “Deterrence Workshop”, organized at NUST, was successfully concluded after four intensive and intellectually enriching days of in-depth discussions, simulations, and hands-on learning.

The workshop brought together a distinguished group of scholars, practitioners, and students, engaging rigorously with deterrence across multiple domains—nuclear strategy, conventional forces, cyber security, and artificial intelligence—effectively bridging theory, policy, and practice.

CIPS extends its sincere appreciation to all speakers, participants, and the dedicated CIPS team for contributing to a truly meaningful academic engagement. Special acknowledgment is due to Dr. Rubina Waseem, Chief Organizer, for her leadership in making the workshop a success.

MoU Signed Between CIPS and IMC

On 7 January 2026, the “Centre for International Peace and Stability (CIPS)”, NUST and the “International Mediation Campus (IMC)”, Germany, signed MoU, marking an important milestone in advancing mediation and conflict resolution at national and international levels.

The MoU establishes a collaborative framework for joint training programmes, research initiatives, faculty and student engagement through guest lectures and webinars, and enhanced institutional visibility. It further aims to strengthen capacity-building efforts, enabling scholars and practitioners to enhance skills in mediation, negotiation, and peaceful dispute settlement across diverse contexts.

Dr Humaira Shafi’s efforts are highly appreciated as the focal person, whose sustained coordination and facilitation were instrumental in the successful conclusion of the MoU.

Visit to the High Commission of the Republic of Rwanda, Islamabad

The Centre for International Peace and Stability (CIPS) facilitated an academic visit by Dr. Humaira and CIPS students to the High Commission of the Republic of Rwanda, Islamabad, on 19 December 2025. The visit was conducted as part of the Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding course and aimed to deepen students’ understanding of genocide, with particular focus on how the Rwandan and Bosnian genocides have influenced contemporary peacekeeping and peacebuilding missions.

The delegation was warmly received by Her Excellency Ms. Fatou Harerimana, High Commissioner of the Republic of Rwanda, along with the Defence Attaché, Lt. Col. Shyaka Ismail. Lt. Col. Shyaka delivered a comprehensive and insightful presentation on Rwanda’s experience of genocide, post-conflict recovery, reconciliation, and nation-building, offering perspectives that meaningfully complemented classroom learning.

The visit proved to be a valuable academic engagement, providing students with first-hand diplomatic, historical, and policy-relevant insights into peacekeeping and post-conflict reconstruction.
