National Centre for Bioinformatics NCB QAU Islamabad

National Centre for Bioinformatics NCB QAU Islamabad The NCB is a community founded and run by the students of National Center for Bioinformatics (NCB) Q

NCB was established as a faculty affiliated research center in 2008 through funding by Higher Education Commission. It is housed in 53000 square feet building comprising 8 research and 2 computational labs. Currently, NCB has been provided 8 academic and 13 supporting staff positions. Besides, it integrates Department of Computer Sciences, other Departments of Biological Sciences and Department of

Mathematics. NCB is offering M.Phil and Ph.D programs in the area of Bioinformatics. The major goal of NCB is to promote quality training and research in the area of Bioinformatics. Bioinformatics originated as a cross-disciplinary field as the need for computational sections to research problem raised in biomedicine. The field evolved as computation became cheaper and widespread during the 80s, as the internet grew during the 90s, and as high throughput technologies become common in the 2000s. The use of computational methods in biomedicine deals with the analysis, storage, manipulation and interpretation of macromolecules such as DNA, RNA and proteins. Conversely, wet lab analysis of computationally predicted functionally relevant motifs/segments of macromolecules further enhances our understanding of complex mechanisms occurring in cells.

QAU and CNCB-China Sign MoU to Strengthen Collaboration

Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad and the China National Center for Bioinformation (CNCB), Beijing, signed a Memorandum of Understanding
to deepen bilateral research and training collaboration. The MoU was signed by QAU, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhter and CNCB Director Prof. Dr. Yungui Yang.

This agreement renews and expands a partnership initiated in 2016 through the efforts of Prof. Dr.
Amir Ali Abbasi and formalized with a five-year MoU in 2017. The earlier MoU delivered notable
outcomes, including joint research projects, student training programs, the establishment of
the international Biodiversity and Health Big Data (BHBD) Alliance, and a series of joint symposia and conferences hosted at CNCB (Beijing) and QAU, NCB, Islamabad.

The new MoU reflects the visionary leadership of Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhter in advancing international collaborations to elevate QAU’s global standing and to create world-class training opportunities for QAU researchers. It also aligns with Pakistan’s national policy encouraging
high-level scientific and technological partnerships with friendly nations, particularly China.
