The U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCAS-W) is a premier research and academic Center at Mehran University of Engineering & Technology (MUET), Jamshoro. Established with support from USAID and in collaboration

The U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCAS-W) has completed the construction, installation, and inauguration of a community-led Reverse Osmosis (RO) water filtration plant in Model Village Lakho Bhanbhro, located in District Thatta, Sindh. The plant is now fully operational and ready to meet the village’s safe drinking water needs.

A Village Water Committee, which includes strong participation from local women, has been thoroughly trained to independently manage the operation, maintenance, and long-term sustainability of the RO plant. USPCAS-W will continue to provide remote technical support.

This initiative serves as a scalable model for decentralized, community-led water filtration systems, contributing to improved public health, local ownership, and sustainable access to water for rural communities across Pakistan.

Mehran University of Engineering & Technology (MUET), Jamshoro has announced admissions for the MS in Climate Change and Environmental Informatics (CCEI) for Spring 2026. The program is a two-year morning program, offered by coursework or research, and is developed under the EU-funded CBHE ACTIVE Project.

The program provides modern teaching and research facilities, opportunities for applied research, international academic linkages, and scholarships for outstanding students. Graduates from a wide range of disciplines including engineering, computer science, environmental sciences, and related fields are eligible to apply.

The application deadline is 6th February 2026, while the admission test will be held on 14th February 2026. Interested candidates must apply online through the MUET admissions portal.

We are proud to highlight Dr Tanveer Gadhi, Assistant Professor at USPCAS-W, who chaired and moderated the technical session on "Water for Municipal Use" at the M.H. Panhwar Institute of Sindh Studies, Jamshoro. The event was also graced by Prof. Dr Rasool Bux Mahar, Vice-Chancellor of BBS-UTECH and former Director of USPCAS-W, who featured as a prominent speaker on water management.

The festival combined technical expertise with cultural advocacy, featuring sessions on the Indus Delta and addressing water pollution.

KARACHI (Wednesday, December 10, 2025): Experts have emphasised that the use of modern technology enables informed and timely decision-making in the larger public interest. They noted that real-time data is essential for such decisions. These views were expressed during the final workshop on the design of the Hydro-Agro Informatics (HAI) Program Phase-I, held under the auspices of the Sindh Water & Agriculture Transformation (SWAT) Project — a World Bank–financed initiative being Implemented by Project Coordination & Monitoring Unit, Planning and Development Department, Government of Sindh in collaboration with the U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCAS-W), Mehran University of Engineering & Technology (MUET), Jamshoro and Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services, Bangladesh.

The inaugural session also featured important remarks from the World Bank. Mr Zelalem Tesfaye Mekonnen, HAI Program Lead and WRM Specialist at the World Bank, highlighted HAI's pivotal role as the project's "digital backbone" in achieving long-term climate resilience, improved Water and Agriculture Management, and sustainability through advanced technology and decision support systems. His address reaffirmed the World Bank's commitment to the transformative goals of the SWAT Project.

Secretary Irrigation, Zarif Iqbal Khero, stated that the Government of Sindh consistently supports technology-driven initiatives that facilitate evidence-based decision-making, particularly during calamities such as the recent floods in the province. He added that action plans are being developed based on both historical and real-time data. He further stated that water pricing is now being implemented in letter and spirit, and that substantial revenue is being collected and highlighted that revenue from the Thar Coal Power Project will contribute to maintaining the Irrigation structure.

Water expert and former IRSA member, Ehsan-ul-Haq Leghari, noted that with the implementation of HAI, the provincial irrigation and agriculture departments will greatly benefit, provided their capacity requirements are properly aligned with the program.

Sharing Bangladesh’s experience, Malik Fida A. Khan, Executive Director of the Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) and Technical Advisor to the HAI Project, delivered a presentation via video link. He said that Bangladesh has developed 26 components of its Flood Action Plan using HAI-type techniques to minimise flood losses and strengthen resilience.

In his welcome address, Mr Nazir Ahmed Memon, Project Coordinator, Project Coordination & Monitoring Unit (PCMU), highlighted the importance of adopting modern, technology-oriented practices for climate adaptation and resilience.

Mr Motaleb Hossain Sarker, Deputy Executive Director, CEGIS Bangladesh & Team Leader, HAI Phase-I, shared insights into the technical design and frameworks of HAI Phase-I. During the technical session, Prof. Dr Kamran Ansari, Director of USPCAS-W at MUET Jamshoro, provided a comprehensive overview of HAI design Phase I and explained how the HAI program will operate, including its institutional arrangements, implementation mechanism and sustainability. He confirmed the successful design of an institutional model, service frameworks, and technology architecture.

The workshop culminated in outlining a promising blueprint for Phase II, which includes: Eleven in-depth frameworks to steer the digital transformation of the water and agriculture sectors. A centralised Industry Data Center to manage all hydro-agro data. Advanced Decision Support Tools (DSTs) and dashboards for better management. Critical capabilities include flood forecasting and real-time Water Flow Monitoring. Innovative advancements, such as satellite-based crop reporting, for enhanced agricultural oversight. A user-friendly mobile application for farmers to access data and advisories directly.

The experts and attendees reached a consensus that the HAI Program has the potential to revolutionise irrigation, agriculture, and crop reporting. This advanced system will benefit not just the irrigation and agriculture departments, but also a broader range of stakeholders, including Policymakers and researchers, academia, other government bodies such as the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and Water and Sanitation Agencies (WASA), the private sector, and industry.

Prof. Dr Tuaha Hussain, Vice Chancellor of MUET Jamshoro, delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, underscoring MUET's commitment to enhancing industry-academia collaboration. He expressed confidence that the HAI Data Center and decision-support tools would pave the way for better data access and foster evidence-based governance across Sindh and Pakistan.

The pre-launch ceremony of the Meryl Williams Fellowship (MWF) brought together key Australian and Pakistani officials, including Australian High Commissioner Timothy Francis Kane, Chairman Dr. Syed Murtaza Hassan Andrabi, and ACIAR Country Manager Mr. Munawar Raza Kazmi, along with the 2024 Pakistan cohort of women agricultural researchers.

The cohort expressed gratitude to ACIAR, Tetra Tech International Development, and the University of New England for supporting the program, which aims to build leadership and management skills among women scientists across the Indo-Pacific.

This year, 20 women researchers from Punjab, Sindh, and federal institutions have been selected, representing major research bodies, agriculture and livestock departments, and leading universities.

Speakers highlighted that the Fellowship comes at a crucial time as Pakistan faces growing agricultural challenges, particularly water scarcity and climate stress. The program is expected to strengthen research capacity, promote global collaboration, and support the adoption of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in Pakistan.

The event concluded with appreciation for the continued investment in empowering women scientists and advancing Pakistan’s agricultural sector.

The U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCAS-W) at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) successfully hosted the Final Stakeholders Engagement Workshop under the CoE-37 project. This hybrid event drew diverse stakeholders, including international participants from Canada and Thailand, uniting to address the urgent need to conserve the Indus River's water quality.

Imagine a river that's not just a lifeline for millions but a thriving ecosystem free from pollution's grip. That vision drives CoE-37, a 36-month initiative funded by Pakistan's Higher Education Commission (HEC). Over the past three years, the project has tackled the Indus River's water quality challenges head-on, using cutting-edge techniques to track pollution sources, design affordable treatment systems, and promote a "water circular economy" that recycles and reuses water sustainably. From assessing emerging contaminants to estimating health costs from polluted waters, the team's work highlights how unchecked urban and industrial waste threatens our health, economy, and environment—and how we can turn the tide.

Prof. Dr Kamran Ansari, Director of USPCAS-W, set the tone with heartfelt opening remarks, welcoming everyone and outlining the workshop's objectives to share the project's physical results and outcomes.

Dr Zubair Ahmed, the former Principal Investigator, kicked off the session with an inspiring overview, sharing the project's key achievements: multiple research papers published in top journals, five insightful policy briefs, and a series of stakeholder events that have sparked authentic dialogue. "We've not only mapped pollution hotspots along the Indus but also proposed practical solutions like nature-based, cost-effective, and community-friendly treatments," Dr Zubair shared, emphasising the human impact. "This isn't just about data; it's about protecting families who rely on this river for drinking, farming, and life itself."

Dr Tanveer Ahmed then delved into the Water Circular Economy framework, a game-changer that shifts from wasteful "take-make-dispose" habits to resilient, inclusive systems. He painted a picture of cities like Lahore, Faisalabad, and Hyderabad adopting on-site treatments to reduce pollution, preserve natural resources, and even create economic opportunities through water reuse.

The event wrapped up with Prof Dr. Rasool Bux Mahar, Vice Chancellor of SBBUTSD, Khairpur Mirs, outlining the way forward. "Collaboration is key," he urged. "By forging strategic partnerships and implementing these findings, we can build a healthier Indus for future generations." At the same time, Director Kamran Ansari closed with heartfelt remarks, thanking all participants and reinforcing the commitment to action.

Attendees engaged in lively Q&A, sharing feedback that will shape future actions, from stricter regulations to public awareness campaigns. This workshop isn't the end—it's a launchpad. The CoE-37 team has already hosted international conferences, trainings on wastewater methods, and policy discussions, all aimed at making clean water a reality for Pakistan's communities. As one participant noted, "Seeing experts from Canada and Thailand join us online reminds us we're all in this together—water knows no borders."
