Call for Abstracts: Deschooling as Provocation – Reimagining Education within and beyond Schools

Symposium at AKU-IED, Karachi | March 26, 2027

Abstract Deadline: October 31, 2026

Modern schooling systems were largely shaped by industrial and colonial models. While these systems expanded access to education, they also narrowed its purpose - reducing learning to credentialing and compliance rather than creativity, care, and liberation. Particularly, over roughly the last 50 years, the economic aim of education has increasingly overshadowed its other aims, from personal fulfillment to active citizenship. In many parts of the world, schooling systems increasingly prioritise competition, productivity, and measurable outcomes over human development, ethical reflection, and social justice.

Join educators, researchers, artists, and community changemakers at the Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development for a one-day symposium that dares to reimagine the idea of education.

We invite conceptual papers, research studies, institutional case studies, and video/poster presentations that engage with thinkers like Illich, Freire, Tagore, hooks, and Nyerere, or share experiments that worked (or didn’t).

Let’s dare to reimagine, and build futures of learning that are more humane, equitable, and transformative.

What does meaningful inclusion look like in practice?

For Ayesha Shahid Mahmood, Assistant Manager, Special Education Needs, and a behavioural therapist, inclusion begins with recognising that every learner experiences the world differently and deserves opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed in ways that honour their strengths.

Drawing on her professional experience supporting diverse learners and families, Ayesha reflects on the importance of moving beyond awareness to create learning environments where every child feels seen, valued, and empowered to thrive.

Her experience reinforces an important truth: when educators, parents, therapists, and institutions work together, inclusion becomes more than an aspiration. It becomes a reality that unlocks opportunities for every learner.

As Ayesha reminds us, inclusion is a shared responsibility. We invite educators, parents, practitioners, and institutions to join us in creating learning environments where every learner feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.
