SMIU Students Societies Hold a Session of Book Club

Sindh Madressatul Islam University’s Literary Society and the Debating Society jointly organised a session of ‘Book Club’ blending literary analysis with parliamentary debate in a format rarely seen at other universities. The parliamentary session was chaired by Husnain Ali, vice president of the Literary Society, and Aman Ali, president of the Debating Society at the Senate Hall of the university.

The proceedings were opened by Mr. Wafa Mansoor Buriro, Assistant Professor in the Department of English, SMIU. In his keynote address he contextualized the social significance of literature and explored any relevancy of the novel “Animal Farm” to the contemporary world. His remarks set a thoughtful tone for the debate that followed.

The member of the Book Club, Ali Mehdi Abro, says that George Orwell’s seminal allegorical novella served as the centerpiece of the discussion. The session critically reviewed the novel, and discussed its various aspects.

The session was structured as a formal parliamentary debate between two teams. One argued from the perspective of the elite class, while the other championed the causes of the lower and middle classes, mirroring the social tensions at the heart of Orwell’s work.

Speaking on behalf of the lower class Nozaif, Maliha, and Maryam, joined by a supporting speaker, while the elite class position was represented by Mansoor, Muqaddas Nawaz, and Rumaisa, with Dasrat Jai Pal as their supporting speaker. Nozaif opened the floor with the first statement, followed by Muqaddas Nawaz presenting opposing view.

Before the formal parliamentary rounds commenced, each team given two minutes per round for arguments, rebuttals, and brief deliberation. At the conclusion of the session, the audience cast their votes. As a result, the audience’s verdict was unambiguous—26 votes for the lower class, just 8 for the elite.”

The ‘Book Club’ session underscored that SMIU’s students are not merely academically engaged but are also eager for meaningful discourse on literary issues, a promising sign for the university's intellectual culture.
