Empowering CS Students to Lead in an AI World.

The School of Mathematics & Computer Science at IBA Karachi was honored to host Ahmed Ayub, Chief Strategy Officer at Conrad Labs, for a thought-provoking session on “What the Future Holds for Students in the Age of AI.”

Mr. Ayub emphasized a defining shift in the tech landscape, where knowing programming languages alone is no longer enough. The true differentiator today is the ability to solve meaningful problems, architect intelligent systems, and build LLM-powered solutions and AI agents that create real-world impact.

The session encouraged students to move beyond traditional coding mindsets and embrace AI as a collaborative tool, while staying grounded in information security, ethical AI, and responsible innovation. Students were also urged to stay informed through leading platforms such as TechCrunch, Mashable, and CNN Tech to remain globally competitive.

Following the session, an engaging discussion between Mr. Ayub and Dr. Shakeel A. Khoja, Dean SMCS, reinforced the importance of sustained academia-industry collaboration to prepare students for the future of work.

We thank Mr. Ayub for sharing invaluable insights and inspiring our students to become creators, innovators, and leaders in the AI-driven world.

Faculty Achievement

We are pleased to share that Solat Jabeen Sheikh, PhD scholar and Lecturer at School of Mathematics and Computer Science, IBA Karachi has successfully defended her PhD thesis titled “On Building a Semi-Automated Framework for Constructing Bayesian Networks from Raw Text”, under the supervision of CS Professor Dr. Sajjad Haider.

The external examiners for the thesis were Professor Dr. Usman Qamar (NUST) and Professor Dr. Agha Ali Raza (LUMS).

The research focuses on addressing the challenge of constructing Networks from unstructured raw text, particularly in data-scarce domains where traditional automated methods are limited. The proposed framework, named CAPTURE, introduces a novel semi-automated, human-in-the-loop approach that combines processing, rule-based causal extraction, and probability estimation using and embedding-based techniques. This enables the transformation of textual causal relationships into graphical models efficiently and accurately.

The framework was evaluated across multiple domains, including political analysis, water management, medical, and food insecurity datasets. The results demonstrate CAPTURE’s effectiveness in generating accurate causal networks and reliable probability estimations, highlighting its potential as a scalable and generalized solution for knowledge extraction and probabilistic modeling from text.

We congratulate Solat Jabeen on this significant and wish her continued success in her future research endeavors.

The Department of Computer Science at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi, successfully conducted the MS Thesis Defense of Syeda Tuba Ali Zaidi, MS Computer Science student at IBA-SMCS.

Her thesis, titled “Exploring the Intersection of AI, Cybersecurity, Energy, and Ethics in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Scoping Study,” examines how Artificial Intelligence can support digitalized energy systems in LMICs while addressing critical dimensions of cybersecurity, ethical governance, and social inclusion.

Using a scoping review and thematic analysis, the research proposes the Responsible and Inclusive AI Energy Systems Theory (RIAI-EST). The framework highlights that long-term benefits of AI in LMIC energy systems depend not only on technological capability but also on robust cybersecurity infrastructure, ethical regulation, and strong commitments to equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).

The findings emphasize that AI implementation is shaped by institutional and governance contexts and is not neutral across settings.

The thesis was supervised by Dr. Faisal Iradat, Assistant Professor at IBA-SMCS, with evaluation by Dr. Faraz Hyder and Dr. Muhammad Umar Farooq from NED University of Engineering & Technology.

IBA-SMCS congratulates Tuba on her academic contribution and wishes her continued success.
