Mission: CIME aims to transform education in Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry and Allied Health professions in Pakistan and East Africa through partnerships and through raising expectations of what is possible in education, innovation, and learning through technology. It has the potential to become a regional leader and be on a par with the best simulation centres globally. The Centre intends on transitioning from being an ‘Excellent Centre’ to a ‘Centre of Excellence’ where teaching and learning are directly linked to improved practitioner performance and improved patient outcomes.

Prof Thesen is Director of AI & Digital Health Curriculum, MD Program, and Professor of Medical Education & Computer Science at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, USA. A cognitive neuroscientist, he is also affiliated with the Brain and Mind Institute at The Aga Khan University.

Karachi is celebrating another global achievement as Aga Khan University (AKU) has won the prestigious AMEE ASPIRE to Excellence Award 2026 for healthcare simulation education.

AKU’s Centre for Innovation in Medical Education (CIME), based in Karachi, received the award for excellence in simulation-based health professions education. Established in 2017, CIME became Pakistan’s first healthcare simulation centre and has grown into one of the country’s leading facilities for medical education and training.

The international recognition highlights Karachi’s growing contribution to healthcare education and reflects AKU’s efforts to improve medical training, patient safety and healthcare systems. The award was presented at the AMEE Conference 2026 in Vienna.

The Aga Khan University Centre for Innovation in Medical Education (CIME), Karachi in collaboration with the AKU Medical College, Pakistan has received the AMEE ASPIRE to Excellence Award 2026 in Healthcare Simulation — a prestigious international recognition of excellence by AMEE - the International Association of Health Professions Education

From becoming South Asia’s first SSH-accredited simulation programme in 2020 to now joining the AMEE ASPIRE Academy, CIME continues to put Pakistan’s healthcare simulation education on the global map. 🌍
