Kohat University Moves Closer to Nursing Department Registration with Appointment of Regular Faculty

Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST) has taken a major step towards the registration of its Department of Nursing with the Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC) by appointing two regular faculty members, in accordance with the council’s prescribed requirements.

The development is the result of continuous and focused efforts by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Syed Zafar Ilyas, who has been closely supervising the completion of all academic and regulatory conditions necessary for the department’s accreditation. The induction of regular faculty was a mandatory prerequisite set by the Pakistan Nursing Council for the registration process.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Dr. Syed Zafar Ilyas reiterated his strong commitment to strengthening academic disciplines at KUST. He stated that the university administration is fully utilizing its resources to ensure the timely registration of the Department of Nursing, in line with national standards and professional benchmarks.

Vice Chancellor further emphasized that the establishment of a fully compliant Nursing Department will not only enhance the university’s academic profile but also contribute significantly to the promotion of quality healthcare education in the region.
This important advancement brings KUST closer to formal recognition of its Nursing Department and reflects the university’s broader vision of academic excellence and institutional growth.

It is deeply disappointing and shameful that instead of being in classrooms, our nursing students - the future frontline healthcare providers - have been forced to spend the entire day in protest under the open sky, from early morning till late night.

These students deserve quality education, recognition, and respect — not neglect. Their peaceful protest is a cry for justice after years of administrative silence.

We once again urge the KUST administration and the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Zafar Ilyas, to immediately address the legitimate demands of the Nursing Department. Every passing hour of delay further damages the reputation of our university and the morale of our students.

KUST Nursing Department

The KUST Nursing Department expresses deep concern over the ongoing issues faced by our nursing students and acknowledges the validity of their grievances raised during yesterday's press conference at the Kohat Press Club.

For the past three years, our students have been deprived of the very facilities and academic support essential for professional nursing education — including permanent faculty, proper infrastructure, and a recognized departmental structure. Despite continuous appeals, official letters, and meetings with the administration and relevant authorities, the legitimate concerns of our students remain unaddressed.

We stand in complete solidarity with our nursing students and firmly believe that their demands are not only justified but long overdue. Their pursuit is not political — it is a demand for academic justice, transparency, and recognition of their right to quality education.

We strongly urge the Honorable Vice Chancellor, Dr. Zafar Ilyas, and the university administration to take immediate and concrete steps to resolve the following key issues:

1. Ensure prompt registration of the Nursing Program with the Pakistan Nursing & Midwifery Council (PNMC).
2. Announce and initiate a paid internship policy.
3. Appoint qualified, permanent faculty members.
4. Allocate and develop a dedicated building for the Nursing Department, ensuring stability, discipline, and academic excellence.

The Nursing Department believes that the reputation of KUST and the future of hundreds of nursing students depend on swift and transparent action. We hope the administration will act responsibly and uphold the values of fairness, education, and institutional integrity.
