M. Phil Literature LCWU The Department of English is the backbone of Lahore College for Women, University. Post graduate classes in Lahore College started in 1940.

The Department of English, Lahore College for Women University can claim to be one of the oldest departments in the country. At that time the department was headed by Mrs. Henry Lal, who later on joined as the Principal of the college and continued working as the head of the English department till 1955. It has been headed in the past by such illustrious academicians as Mrs Urmilla Siraj ud Din, M

rs Shaukat Ara Niazi, Mrs Mahboob, Mrs Shah, Mrs. Mazhar and Dr. Nosheen Khan. Since attaining the status of a university, the department has explored new avenues. We have developed our own courses, keeping in mind the aim that we have to offer new vistas of understanding and perception to young women from varied backgrounds. Courses in African and post-colonial literatures, in particular, help the students understand their social structures, thus allowing them to develop as human beings, which is literature’s ultimate goal. The department now offers a BS 4 year degree programme in keeping with the rest of the world. The department has also started an MS programme in English Literature. Our faculty is comprised of senior and experienced teachers as well as young graduates. Some of our faculty members are currently pursuing their doctoral studies abroad. The English Department welcomes you to join it and take part in its endeavor to produce graduates who are enlightened, progressive and, at the same time, are able to understand the value of traditions.

The Seminar was followed by tea and books were presented to the guests, Deans and Directors as token of thanks from the English Department. The Seminar was very interesting and enlightening and it turned out to be a great source of information for the students of Literature.

Report: Seminar on Modern Drama
Drama is a genre that seems to have originated with the advent of life, with the making of human soul, with the formation of the first mould of human body. The first drama of human existence, however, was performed with only a little cast of characters, namely Adam, Eve, and Satan (and of course, not to forget the surprise entry of the Serpent).
