Most theses don’t fail at analysis. They fail much earlier—inside the methodology.
If your methodology feels “fine” but supervisors keep pushing back, the issue is usually structural, not intellectual. A strong methodology answers five non-negotiable questions with precision:
1️⃣ 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻.
Have you clearly justified why your study is qualitative, quantitative, or mixed? “Because others used it” is not a justification.
2️⃣ 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀.
What exact tools did you use—and why are they the best fit for your research questions?
3️⃣ 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆.
Who did you study, how many, and on what logical basis were they selected?
4️⃣ 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀.
Which techniques and software align with your design—and can another researcher replicate your process?
5️⃣ 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.
Have you shown awareness of consent, confidentiality, and practical constraints—and how you addressed them?
When these five elements are tightly aligned, methodology stops being a hurdle and becomes your thesis’s strongest defense.
If you’re stuck rewriting, second-guessing, or facing repeated supervisor comments on your methodology, it’s time to fix the structure—not just the wording.
