UHS VC calls for for practical nutrition training to tackle malnutrition in Pakistan

LAHORE, May 20: The University of Health Sciences on Wednesday concluded a three-day Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) training workshop aimed at strengthening the capacity of healthcare professionals, faculty members and nutrition experts in the prevention and management of child malnutrition. The concluding session was presided over by Vice Chancellor Prof. Ahsan Waheed Rathore, who highlighted the urgent need to integrate nutrition and community-based care into mainstream medical education and healthcare delivery systems.

Addressing the participants, Prof. Rathore said that malnutrition remained one of the major public health challenges in Pakistan and required coordinated efforts from healthcare institutions, academia and community workers. He said UHS was committed to promoting competency-based medical education and practical training programmes that could directly improve healthcare outcomes at the community level. “Healthcare professionals must be equipped not only with clinical knowledge but also with counselling and communication skills to effectively support mothers and children,” he remarked. He added that strengthening nutrition education in undergraduate and postgraduate curricula was essential for sustainable improvement in child health indicators.

The third day of the workshop focused on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), caregiver counselling and integration of CMAM into clinical and community healthcare services. Sessions were conducted by experts including Ms. Nayab Fatima, Prof. Dr. Shahid Mahmood Sethi, Dr. Usman Javed Iqbal, Dr. Saria Khalid and Dr. Anam Zahra. Participants received practical training on nutrition counselling, growth monitoring, referral pathways, communication strategies and assessment methods for nutrition education in medical institutions.

The workshop also emphasized the role of Lady Health Workers, family medicine, school health programmes and community outreach in addressing malnutrition and improving child nutrition outcomes. Experts discussed barriers to effective nutrition counselling, cultural myths related to feeding practices, and the importance of family-centered care. Interactive activities including counselling role plays, growth chart interpretation and action planning exercises were conducted to enhance hands-on learning and institutional implementation strategies.

Participants at the closing session appreciated the workshop and termed it highly relevant for improving professional capacity in nutrition and child healthcare. Many participants observed that the training provided practical knowledge rarely covered in routine medical education and helped them better understand counselling techniques, community engagement and multidisciplinary approaches to malnutrition management. They expressed hope that similar trainings would continue regularly across medical institutions in Pakistan to strengthen national nutrition services.

At the conclusion of the workshop, certificates were distributed among the participants by Vice Chancellor Prof. Ahsan Waheed Rathore and Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Nadia Naseem. Among others facilitators present on the occasion were Mr. Ihtesham ul Haq, Dr. Uzma Jabeen, Dr. Anam Saeed, Prof. Najaf Masood, and Dr. Midhat Salman, who moderated the sessions.

CMAM workshop strengthens clinical skills for managing acute malnutrition

May 19: The second day of the workshop on Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) focused on enhancing participants’ clinical knowledge and practical competencies for the effective management of acute malnutrition in children. The sessions emphasized assessment, classification, treatment, referral, and evidence-based management of children suffering from acute malnutrition.

The day began with a recap of key concepts followed by an interactive quiz session aimed at reinforcing learning outcomes. Participants then attended detailed sessions on diagnostic criteria for Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM), appetite assessment, identification of danger signs, and differentiation between complicated and uncomplicated SAM.

These sessions were conducted by Prof. Najaf Masood, Professor of Pediatrics at Allama Iqbal Medical College and Jinnah Hospital, who highlighted the importance of timely diagnosis and standardized clinical management for reducing child morbidity and mortality associated with malnutrition.

Participants also explored the Outpatient Therapeutic Programme (OTP) under the guidance of Dr. Uzma Jabeen, Associate Professor and Head of Family Medicine at University of Health Sciences. Discussions focused on admission and discharge criteria, monitoring of weight gain, antibiotic therapy, deworming, vitamin A supplementation, and follow-up protocols for malnourished children.

A dedicated session on Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) was conducted by Mr. Ihtesham ul Haq, Social and Behaviour Change Officer at UNICEF. The session covered RUTF composition, dosage calculations, administration methods, storage requirements, caregiver counselling, and compliance monitoring. Participants also took part in practical exercises including appetite testing, dosage calculations, and counselling simulations to strengthen their applied clinical skills.

The afternoon sessions focused on the management of complicated SAM in accordance with the WHO 10-step approach. Participants were trained in stabilization centre care and the recognition and management of critical complications including hypoglycaemia, hypothermia, dehydration, sepsis, shock, severe anaemia, electrolyte imbalance, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and HIV-associated malnutrition.

Through interactive case-based discussions and realistic clinical scenarios, participants practiced classification of nutritional status, formulation of treatment plans, and referral decision-making in line with national CMAM guidelines, further strengthening their evidence-based clinical and critical decision-making skills.
