Mountains -- like humans -- can be old or young.

Young mountains, like the Himalayas, are still rising due to ongoing tectonic activity. It's highest peak, Mount Everest, is 8,849 meters.

Old mountains, like the Appalachians in North America, have been eroded over time. The highest peak in the Appalachians is Mount Mitchell in North Carolina at 2,037 meters.

A few fun facts about mountains (from https://www.twinkl.com.pk/):

1. Mauna Kea (in Hawaii) is over 10,000 metres tall, but only 4,207 metres are above sea level. The rest of the mountain is underwater.

2. The worst avalanche in history was on Mount Huascaran in Peru in 1970. It was caused by an earthquake and sadly killed 20,000 people.

3. The formation of the Andes Mountains redirected the Amazon river into the Atlantic Ocean -- the river had previously flowed into the Pacific.

4. Whale fossils have been found on top of the Andes Mountains, proving that this rock had once been at the bottom of an ocean.

5. Mount Everest is growing by about 6 cms each year as a result of the Indian sub-continent pushing into Asia.

6. The most difficult mountain to climb in the world is K2 on the Pakistan-China border. It is called "Savage Mountain" as it’s only possible to climb it by certain routes rather than all sides.

Announcement:
All IEAP Levels will prepare presentations for International Mountain Day (IMD) as part of their class assignments. While IMD is celebrated on 11 December every year, our own celebration will be 2 days earlier, on Tuesday 9 December.

Why do we celebrate International Mountain Day?
IMD is celbrated to raise awareness about the importance of mountains for life and to highlight the opportunities and challenges of mountain development. The day was established by the United Nations to emphasize the need for sustainable mountain development, protect mountain ecosystems, and improve the lives of people living in mountain regions.
