Successful Public Defense Ceremony of Ms Sadia Rani, Ms Iram Kousar and Hafsa Javaid

The Women University Multan PhD Scholar Sadia Rani, Department of Chemistry has been recommended for the doctoral degree after successful public defense ceremony held at Katchery Campus, The Women University Multan. Her thesis title was “Theoretical Studies of Trapping of Gaseous Analytes and Nitro-explosives using Porous Organic Cage; CC1” She did her work under supervision of Dr. Samina Aslam, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, WUM and Prof. Dr. Mirza Arfan Yawer, University of Education Lahore, Attock Campus. Her external supervisors were Prof. Haq Nawaz Bhatti, Department of Chemistry, University of Agriculture Faisalabad and Dr. Syed Tarique Moin, Associate Professor, H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, Karachi. Dr. Sadia Rani presented a comprehensive density functional theory investigation of the trapping and sensing of various gaseous analytes and nitro-explosives using porous organic cage CC1. The primary objective was to understand the host-guest interaction mechanisms, focusing on size-selective trapping, electronic properties and thermodynamic parameters. The results demonstrate that the trapping efficiency is strongly governed by the size compatibility between the analyte molecules and the cavity of CC1, where analytes with dimensions comparable to the pore size exhibit enhanced encapsulation. Overall, this work provides fundamental theoretical insights into the design of selective porous materials and nanostructures for the detection and trapping of environmentally hazardous analytes, with potential applications in environmental monitoring, sensing technologies, and safety systems. She defended her work very well and after queries session, it was recommended from the participants to award the degree to Dr. Sadia Rani.

The Women University Multan PhD Scholar Iram Kousar, Department of Chemistry has been recommended for the doctoral degree after successful public defense ceremony held at Katchery Campus, The Women University Multan. Her thesis title was “Synthesis of Aryl-substituted Thio/Carbohydrazides based Chromoflourescent Sensor for detection of Heavy metal ions” She did her work under supervision of Dr Samina Aslam, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry,WUM and her external supervisor were Prof. Dr Mirza Arfan Yawer Department of Chemistry, UE Lahore (Attock campus) and Prof. Dr. Aziz ur Rehman, Chemistry Department, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur. Dr Iram Kousar focuses on the synthesis and characterization of aryl-substituted thio/carbohydrazide based chromofluorescent sensors and their application in the selective detection of heavy metal ions, supported by spectroscopic and DFT studies. Her research findings provide a valuable contribution to the field of sensors. She presented and defended her work excellently, responding to all queries with confidence and clarity, it was recommended from the participants to award the degree to Dr. Iram Kousar.

The Department of Chemistry at The Women University Multan successfully conducted the PhD thesis defence of its research scholar, Hafsa Javaid, in a formal and intellectually stimulating session.Hafsa Javaid presented her research work titled *“Fabrication of Carbon-Based Metal Nanocomposites Embedded Polymeric Membrane for Effective Wastewater Remediation.”* The study focuses on the development of advanced nanocomposite membranes aimed at improving the efficiency of wastewater treatment technologies. The research was conducted under the supervision of **Dr. Sara Musaddiq**, Department of Chemistry, whose guidance and mentorship were acknowledged throughout the study. The defence was evaluated by esteemed external examiners, Dr. Saadat Majeed from Bahauddin Zakariya University and Dr. Naheed Riaz from The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, who critically reviewed the research and appreciated its scientific contribution and practical significance.During the defence, the scholar confidently addressed questions and engaged in a comprehensive discussion with the evaluation committee. The committee expressed satisfaction with the quality of research, experimental design, and findings. At the conclusion of the session, **Hafsa Javaid** was declared successful and the committee recommended the award of the PhD degree. The Department of Chemistry congratulates the scholar and her supervisor on this significant academic achievement and extends best wishes for her future endeavors in research and professional excellence.
