Study Tour Visit to Department of Forestry and Range Management, Kohsar University Murree
The Department of Forestry and Range Management, Kohsar University Murree warmly welcomed the study tour of BSc (Hons.) Forestry students from the Institute of Forest Sciences, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur on 14-05-2026.
During the visit, Dr Muhammad Safdar Hussain delivered an insightful session highlighting the ecological and environmental importance of mountain forests and their vital role in biodiversity conservation, watershed protection, climate regulation, and sustainable livelihoods.
The session also focused on the application of advanced technologies in modern forestry research and management, including:
• Machine Learning (ML)
• Deep Learning (DL)
• Artificial Intelligence (AI)
• Data Science
• Advanced Remote Sensing and GIS Technologies
Students were further briefed about an ongoing research project funded by the Pakistan Academy of Sciences. The project emphasizes smart forest monitoring through the integration of Internet of Things (IoT)-based sensors, cloud computing using AWS, and real-time early warning systems for forest monitoring and protection.
The project demonstrates how data-driven approaches can support sustainable forest management, wildfire risk assessment, and environmental monitoring in Pakistan.
Later, the students visited the recent landslide-affected areas in Jhika Galli, Murree, where many local residents were severely impacted. The field visit provided students with practical exposure to environmental challenges associated with mountain ecosystems, land degradation, slope instability, and climate-related disasters in the Murree region.
The interactive session and field exposure offered students valuable insight into emerging technologies and innovative research trends in forestry, while also encouraging academic collaboration and future research opportunities.
