🗺️ Classification of Map Projections

According to Developable Surface

How do cartographers transform the curved Earth 🌍 into a flat map 🗺️? One way is to imagine the Earth’s surface being projected onto a developable surface that can be flattened.

There are three major types:

🔵 1. Cylindrical Projection
The Earth is projected onto a cylinder wrapped around the globe. When unfolded, it produces a rectangular map.
📌 Useful especially for world maps and equatorial regions.
Example: Mercator Projection.

🟢 2. Conical Projection
The Earth is projected onto a cone placed over the globe. When the cone is opened, it forms a fan-shaped map.
📌 Particularly useful for mid-latitude regions.
Example: Lambert Conformal Conic Projection.

🟠 3. Azimuthal / Planar Projection
The Earth is projected onto a flat plane touching or intersecting the globe at a point or along a line.
📌 Commonly useful for polar regions and maps centred on a particular place.
Example: Azimuthal Equidistant Projection.

Cylinder → Cone → Plane
Cylindrical → Conical → Azimuthal

📌 Key idea: The developable surface determines how the curved Earth is transferred onto a flat map—and therefore influences the pattern of distortion.

Yesterday, a resource person was invited to conduct a workshop on the concept of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Social Sciences Block of Government College Peshawar, HED KPK . Students from the Departments of Statistics, Pakistan Studies, Political Science, and Geography actively participated in the session.

Following the lecture, an interactive question-and-answer session was held, during which students received satisfactory responses to their queries. The participants highly appreciated the informative activity and expressed their gratitude to the college administration for organizing such a valuable learning opportunity.
