Rawalpindi Women University opened its first two-day Mega Book Fair, with Commissioner Rawalpindi Division Mr. Salman Ghani inaugurating the event as chief guest by cutting the ceremonial ribbon. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Tayyaba Zareef was also present.
After the inauguration, the commissioner and the vice chancellor, accompanied by heads of departments, toured the book stalls. The students briefed visitors on the subjects and content on display.
The fair aims to encourage a reading culture among students, make quality books more accessible, and broaden academic and literary activity on campus. It offered books across a wide range of subjects, including current editions.
Commissioner Mr. Ghani praised the organisers for the fair, the quality of the selection and the range of subjects available. He also commended the students for being well versed on the subjects of the books on display. Noting that reading habits and sustained attention spans are under strain today, he said reconnecting young people with books is an important educational need, and that quality, up-to-date editions can play an effective part in achieving this. “Books are the best friends when it comes to solving problems,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Tayyaba Zareef said books are not merely a source of information but play a fundamental role in building critical thinking, intellectual maturity and deeper understanding. She said that in an age of artificial intelligence and digital technology, students should make good use of modern resources while also adopting a consistent habit of reading. Sustained reading, she added, strengthens focus and concentration, and the ability to examine a subject from different angles.
The vice chancellor said the Rawalpindi women University is committed to practical steps that foster a scholarly environment, where students have access to quality books and read beyond their syllabus requirements. She also announced that the university library will be upgraded by latest editions.
The Mega Book Fair will run for two days. Students, faculty and other participants will be able to explore books on a variety of subjects, become familiar with new publications, and broaden their intellectual horizons through reading.
