University of Baltistan Holds Seminar on “Serving Humanity: Patriotism Through Social Responsibility”
Skardu, August 21, 2026: The University of Baltistan, Skardu (UoBS), organized a lecture on the theme “Serving Humanity: Patriotism Through Social Responsibility” as part of its monthly lecture series.
The keynote speaker was renowned historian, author, and researcher of Gilgit-Baltistan, Muhammad Hassan Hasrat. Dr. Sabir Ali, Lecturer in the Department of Educational Development,Naila Batool, Lecturer of Pakistan Studies, Social worker Yahya Jafri.
In a special message, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Masood Akhtar highlighted the importance of patriotism through community service and social responsibility. He stated that the rise and decline of nations is determined by selfless service to humanity, mutual tolerance, and meaningful participation in social life. The true purpose of higher education is not merely to confer degrees, but to instill national spirit, moral values, and a sense of social responsibility in students.
In his welcome address, Aftab Hussain highlighted the objectives of the lecture series and said that the decline of nations does not occur merely because of a lack of resources, but rather due to a lack of civic awareness, patriotism, and social responsibility.
Dr. Sabir Ali, Lecturer in the Department of Educational Development, also observed that nations decline not because of a shortage of resources but because of a lack of civic consciousness, patriotism, and social responsibility. Discussing the true meaning of patriotism, the broader concept of community, and environmental protection, he said that identifying and supporting the protectors of the homeland without prejudice, establishing bonds of love and cooperation with them, and standing alongside them are essential for national development.
Lecturer of Pakistan Studies, Naila Batool, stated that patriotism should not remain confined to slogans; its true expression lies in serving humanity. She noted that, given the region's challenging geographical conditions, educational and healthcare challenges, and environmental threats, young people must move beyond slogans and take practical action.
Renowned Youth social worker Yahya Jaffri said that we are all living as global citizens, and the real question is what solutions we can offer to address the problems faced by our communities. He also encouraged students to read two internationally recognized books to develop a deeper understanding of social issues.
The keynote speaker, renowned historian, author, and researcher Muhammad Hassan Hasrat, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the administration of the University of Baltistan for organizing a seminar on such an important and relevant topic. He remarked that every time he visits the University of Baltistan, he gets an opportunity to learn something new. He further stated that education without proper training and character-building can become a double-edged sword that may cause harm rather than benefit.
At the conclusion, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Ashfaque Ahmad Shah, thanked all the speakers and participants and presented a brief summary of the proceedings.
The programme began with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Muhammad Kamal, while Fozia performed the duties of moderator/host.
