Renal failure means the kidneys are unable to filter waste products, balance fluids, and regulate electrolytes effectively. It can be acute (sudden) or chronic (progressive and permanent).
🔹 Types
1. Acute Kidney Injury (AKI / Acute Renal Failure):
• Develops suddenly (hours to days).
• Often reversible if treated promptly.
• Causes:
• Pre-renal: decreased blood flow (shock, dehydration, heart failure).
• Renal (intrinsic): direct kidney damage (glomerulonephritis, toxins, drugs, ischemia).
• Post-renal: obstruction (stones, enlarged prostate, tumors).
2. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD / Chronic Renal Failure):
• Slow, progressive loss of kidney function over months to years.
• Usually irreversible.
• Common causes: diabetes, hypertension, chronic glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney disease.
