Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction: Awareness Lecture for Students 🌍🛡️

The Department of Law, hosted an awareness lecture on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction, organised by in collaboration with VSO under the ACTIVE project Prime Minister’s Youth Programme (PMYP)

The lecture was delivered by Muhammad Hanzala (Attorney at Law).

Pakistan produces less than 1% of the world's greenhouse gases, yet it is among the countries hit hardest by climate change. The 2022 floods alone affected 33 million people. The lecture helped students understand this reality and their role in facing it.

Key topics covered:
🌡️ The difference between weather and climate, and why the earth is getting hotter
🌊 Pakistan's main climate hazards: floods, heatwaves, glacial lake outbursts, drought and smog
📖 Key concepts of hazard, vulnerability, capacity and risk
🛡️ Disaster Risk Reduction: preparing before a disaster through early warning, family emergency plans and go-bags
🚑 Safe evacuation, basic first response and how to call Rescue 1122
🤝 Why persons with disabilities, the elderly, women and children must be helped first

The key message: the hazard is natural, but the disaster is often man-made. Preparation saves lives.

Students showed keen interest and asked thoughtful questions. We thank Bargad, VSO and PMYP for this initiative, and all students for their active participation. Young people are the first responders of their communities. 💪
