Mamy ogromną przyjemność zaprosić Państwa na dwudniowe warsztaty z Science and Technology Studies (STS), które poprowadzi Prof. Dr. Margarita Boenig-Liptsin z ETH w Zurychu – jedna z kluczowych postaci na świecie w badaniach nad nauką i technologią.
📍Termin: 2–3 czerwca 2025
📍 Miejsce: Instytut Socjologii

To wyjątkowa okazja, by przez kilka godzin pracować i dyskutować z czołową badaczką STS, rozwijając swoje zainteresowania na styku socjologii i studiów nad nauką i technologią. Warsztaty będą prowadzone w formie praktycznych ćwiczeń i interaktywnych analiz, co pozwoli Wam zdobyć cenne doświadczenie w tej dynamicznie rozwijającej się dziedzinie.
Dodatkowo, drugiego dnia warsztatów odbędzie się panel dyskusyjny z udziałem Prof. Boenig-Liptsin oraz Fundacji Panoptykon, poświęcony sztucznej inteligencji z perspektywy STS. To świetna okazja do pogłębienia wiedzy o wpływie technologii na społeczeństwo i do zadania pytań ekspertom.

Z radością rozpoczynamy nowy semestr i dzielimy się z Państwem informacjami o nadchodzących spotkaniach w ramach seminarium Capturing Invisible. Przygotowaliśmy fascynującą serię wykładów, które z pewnością dostarczą inspirujących dyskusji na najważniejsze współcześnie tematy.

Pierwsze seminarium odbędzie się 13 marca 2025 r. o godz. 18:00 (CET) i będziemy gościć doktora Alberto Aparicio (University of Texas - Medical Branch). Jego wykład, „Making Death Optional: The Construction of the Longevity Subject as a Reflection of Hopeful and Technology-Driven Futures”, podejmie temat tego, jak medycyna długowieczności zmienia tożsamość pacjentów, przesuwając nacisk z leczenia chorób na proaktywne podejście do zdrowia i wydłużania życia. Alberto analizuje koncepcję „podmiotu długowieczności” – jednostki, która traktuje starzenie się jako proces podlegający modyfikacji i angażuje się w personalizowane, technologicznie wspierane strategie dbania o zdrowie.

Na podstawie wywiadów jakościowych i badań etnograficznych autor ukazuje, jak medycyna długowieczności promuje nastawione na przyszłość podejście do zdrowia, łącząc odpowiedzialność osobistą, zarządzanie ryzykiem i aktywizm. Twierdzi, że to przesunięcie oznacza pojawienie się nowego paradygmatu w ochronie zdrowia, w którym dobrostan staje się ustrukturyzowanym i opartym na danych procesem, wpisującym się w szersze wizje przyszłości i potencjału ludzkiego.

🚀 Exploring Energy Innovation in London! 🇬🇧

Last week, the gEneSys project team had an inspiring visit to Imperial College London 🎓, where we discussed ongoing project developments and explored cutting-edge energy solutions.

🔬 Carbon Capture & Storage ( ) at Imperial

We had the opportunity to visit Imperial College London's Carbon Capture Pilot Plant 🏭💨. This unique four-story facility allows students to operate a real CCS system, bridging academic research with industrial practice. CCS is a crucial technology for mitigating CO₂ emissions and advancing climate solutions. 🌍♻️

🏗️ King’s Cross Development: A Model for Decentralized Energy

We also toured King’s Cross Energy Centre ⚡🔥—a 6MW Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system that efficiently supplies heating, hot water, and electricity to the entire district. This project demonstrates how district energy systems can significantly cut emissions (by at least 50% compared to 2005 levels) and enhance energy efficiency! 🌱🔋

These visits offered valuable insights into energy decarbonization, with relevant lessons for Poland’s energy transition 🇵🇱⚡.

Ember D. McCoy is a fifth year Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability specializing in Environmental Justice and Science and Technology Public Policy. She is an interdisciplinary scholar, examining environmental racism through the prism of Science, Technology, and Society, feminist geography, and political ecology. Her dissertation employs a case study of Southwest Detroit to investigate laypersons’ non-technical ways of knowing environmental harm and their incommensurability with environmental policymaking in the United States. By focusing on these dimensions, her goal is to produce fundamental knowledge on how (techno)environmental solutions can embody a more just and liberatory praxis.

“The People are the Experts”: Disrupting scientific and technical ways of knowing ‘safety’ in U.S. air pollution regulation and monitoring.



Abstract

From AIDS and breast cancer patients to environmental citizen-scientists, lay publics have long formed social movements to challenge state authority around science and technology policymaking. In doing so, they adopt varying strategies to navigate the ‘expertise barrier:’ “the formal and informal rules” that make it hard for those “without technical expertise to engage as equals” with scientific elite (Parthasarathy, 2020, p. 355). Science, Technology, and Society (STS) scholars have thoroughly documented the ways in which activists’ groups have successfully garnered proof and/or legitimacy to pe*****te this barrier. However, I argue that many of these strategies are not just attempts to influence science, but are, in fact, attempts to disrupt techno-environmental epistemologies altogether. Using the case study of environmental justice (EJ) activism in Southwest Detroit, I articulate the ways in which activists intentionally “destabilize and undo” (Latour, 1983) technoscientific ways of knowing environmental exposure. In doing so, I detail two strategies: a white cross campaign and toxic tours. While these strategies are often thought of only in terms of political performance, I argue that they are engaging in important epistemological disruption, and that, as STS scholars, we need to interpret them as such to seriously engage and analyze the politics of knowledge in science and technology policymaking.

We had a fantastic Capturing Invisible LAB seminar on November 7th, connecting scholars from all corners of the globe – Australia, Taiwan, Brazil, India, Italy and Poland! 🌏

Anna Cain from the Australian National University shared fascinating insights on remote renewable energy initiatives in Indigenous communities in Northern Australia. 💡

The discussion explored the intersection of energy, technology, and social justice, drawing important lessons on how to better incorporate Indigenous perspectives and co-create energy transition. 🤝
