From the places where teachers of our teachers were thought. Where the ideas and concepts of modern orthodontics were created. At the meeting on the day of Saint Apollonia, in front of the picture of our Patron the decision was made.

We have the honour to announce that the Recipient of the Gloria Orthodontiae Medal this year is Professor Birte MELSEN long-term and current Head of the Orthodontic Department Aarhus, Denmark.

Professor Melsen received her dental degree in 1964 and became a certified orthodontist in 1971. In 1974, she finished her odontological doctorate and from 1975, she has been Professor and Head at the Department of Orthodontics, School of Dentistry, Aarhus University. Professor Melsen has authored more than 350 publications in the fields of growth and development studied on human autopsy material, bone biology and clinical studies by means of the implant method.
She is the honorary member of Danish Orthodontic Society, Egyptian Orthodontic Society, Deutsche Kieferorthopadische Gesellschaft (Germany), Italian Orthodontic Society (SIDO), Austrian Dental Society, South African Orthodontic Society, Finnish Orthodontic Society, French Orthodontic Society, Official Assignments and Societa Italiano di Biomechanicca et Ortodonzia Segmentata. She has received numerous awards and honorary degrees within and outside Europe. 1984 Receiver of the Marie Longaard Award for Female Researchers. 1986 Recipient: “Robert Strang Award” in Orthodontics. 1986 Recipient: “Jarabak” Scholarship. 1989 Recipient: “Dannin” Research Grant. 1991 Recipient: “Zendium” prize. 1993 Recipient: “Hanstedgårdfondens” prize. 1993 & 1995 Recipient: “The Jarabak Memorial Orthodontic Teachers and Research Award”. 1995 Recipient: “Dandy” prize. 1997 Recipient: American Association of Orthodontists Foundation, PARC. 1997 Invited Speaker: Angle Society of Orthodontists, The American Division, Montreal, Canada. 1999 Best Lecture: Angle Society of Orthodontists. 1999 World SIDO prize, Rome, Italy. 2001 Invited Presenter: Sheldon Friel Memorial Award Lecture. 2005 Best paper: European Journal of Orthodontics. 2006 Recipient: Bakker Sorenson Award for landmark research. 2006 Invited Presenter: Wendell Wylie Memorial Lecture. 2006 Invited Presenter: Alton Moore Memorial Lecture. 2006 Best Paper: SIDO. 2007 Invited Presenter: Robert Moyers Memorial Lecture. 2012 Recepient of Gloria Orthodontiae Medal.
She helded a lot of honorary positions as President of the Scandinavian Orthodontic Society in 1976; President of Nordic Orthodontic Society in 1984; President of the Danish Orthodontic Society in 1988 and 1994-97; Vice-president of European Orthodontic Society Congress, Copenhagen, Denmark in 1990; Visiting Professor, Universita Degli Studi Di Napoli, Il FacoltaDi Medina E Chirugia, Scuola Di Specializza¬zione in Ortognatodonzia, Italy in 1990-92; Associate Editor of Orthodontics and Craniofacial Research in 1994; Vice-president of Danish Orthodontic Society in 2001; President of European Orthodontic Society in 2004.
Since 1974 she was lecturing all over the world on Growth and Development, Biomechanics, symmetries, Interdisciplinary treat¬ments, Skeletal Anchorage. Adult Orthodontics and more than 300 courses on various aspects of orthodontic treatment and research.
Gloria Orthodontiae
During the last years, her special interest is in the fields of skeletal anchorage, virtual imaging, adult orthodontics and stem cells. She is still lecturing all over the world, but specially in south America where she is actively involved in fund raising for street children. Prof. Melsen is one of eleventh Honorary members of European Orthodontic Society.
She speaks several languages: Dunish, English, French, German, Italy and Latin. Professor Birte Melsen is extremely cultural person in fields of theatre, painting, philosophy and history.
Her abilities were recognized by the Queen and was awarded an order of Knighthood of “Dannebrog” 2nd Degree in 1986 and Knighthood of “Dannebrog” 1st Degree in 2000.
She had been a great success in every state she had followed but she is also a human and some rumours are about her piano playing which is on our – a human level.
We have the honour to present the Gloria Orthodontiae Medal to professor Birte Melsen the Person who could create the Friendship which lasts years. The Person who creates future who could created places for other places and is the real Authority on which can be build the World – not only our World.
