Wracamy raz jeszcze do sztokholmskiej konferencji „New Voices in Children’s Literature in Translation: Culture, Power and Transnational Approaches”, która odbyła się w 2024 roku. Okazuje się, że panel poświęcony polskiej literaturze dziecięcej i strategiom translatorskim zaowocował jeszcze jedną publikacją 🎤➡️📚

W najnowszym numerze czasopisma „Prace Filologiczne. Literaturoznawstwo” ukazał się artykuł mgr Michalina Wesołowska pt. „Prestiż, peryteksty i habitusy polskich tłumaczy literatury dziecięcej na przełomie XIX i XX wieku”, przygotowany na podstawie referatu wygłoszonego podczas konferencji.

We are returning once again to the conference “New Voices in Children’s Literature in Translation: Culture, Power and Transnational Approaches”, held in Stockholm in 2024. It turns out that the panel devoted to Polish children’s literature and translators’ strategies has resulted in yet another publication 🎤➡️📚

The latest issue of “Prace Filologiczne. Literaturoznawstwo” [Philological Studies. Literary Research] features an article (in Polish) by Michalina Wesołowska entitled “Prestige, Peritexts, and Habitus of Polish Translators of Children’s Literature at the Turn of the Twentieth Century”, based on the paper she presented at the conference.

Dziś razem z innymi polskimi humanistami żegnamy prof. Piotra Oczkę z Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego. Wszyscy wiedzą, że był polonistą, anglistą i niderlandystą, wykładowcą, tłumaczem, erudytą, kolekcjonerem, znawcą historii sztuki — jednym słowem prawdziwym człowiekiem renesansu. Nie wszyscy pamiętają jednak, że był również miłośnikiem pisarstwa Lucy Maud Montgomery, której poświęcił część swojego naukowego dorobku. Pracom jego i jego zespołu zawdzięczamy na przykład ważne odkrycie, że pierwszy polski przekład "Anne of Green Gables" autorstwa R. Bernsteinowej trafił do polszczyzny za pośrednictwem języka szwedzkiego (link do artykułu w komentarzu). Poznaliśmy go podczas organizowanej przez nasz Zespół poznańskiej konferencji "110 lat 'Anne of Green Gables' Lucy Maud Montgomery w Polsce" w 2022 roku, podczas której wygłosił wykład plenarny. Jego artykuł o recepcji i interpretacji powieści o Anne Shirley – ukończony pomimo pogarszającego się stanu zdrowia – trafił do tomu pokonferencyjnego (link w drugim komentarzu).

Piotrze, dziękujemy za Twoją pasję, zaangażowanie, odwagę, które zostaną z nami i będą dalej inspirować.

Today, together with other Polish humanities scholars, we bid farewell to Professor Piotr Oczko from the Jagiellonian University. We all know that he was a scholar of Polish, English and Dutch, a lecturer, translator, polymath, art collector and historian — in a word, a Renaissance man if ever there was one. Not everyone remembers, however, that he was also a great reader of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, to which he devoted part of his academic efforts. To him and his team we owe the important discovery that the first Polish translation of 'Anne of Green Gables' by R. Bernsteinowa found its way into Polish via Swedish (see link to the article in the comments). We met him at the conference ‘110 Years of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s 'Anne of Green Gables' in Poland’, organised by our Team in Poznań in 2022, during which he gave a plenary lecture. His article on the reception and interpretation of the Anne Shirley novels – completed despite his failing health – was included in the post-conference volume (see link in the second comment).

Piotr, thank you for your passion, dedication and courage; they will remain with us and continue to inspire.

Jak na sezon wakacyjny, mamy sporo wieści 😉📚 Tym razem – lekturowe.

Z radością informujemy, że niedawno ukazał się nowy numer „Wielogłos. Pismo Wydziału Polonistyki UJ” poświęcony polskim kontekstom literaturoznawczych studiów o niepełnosprawności. Na łamach pisma opublikowany został artykuł prof. UAM dr hab. Agnieszka Kwiatkowska „Konstrukt niepełnosprawności rozproszonej w książkach dla dzieci”. Autorka omawia specyficzny sposób postrzegania niepełnosprawności w najnowszej literaturze dla dzieci, przywołując m.in. „Różowe środy albo podróż z ciotką Huldą” Sylvii Heinlein w przekładzie Tomasza Osińskiego.

For the holiday season, we certainly have plenty of news to share 😉📚 This time, it’s something to read.

We are delighted to announce that a new issue of “Wielogłos” has recently been published, devoted to Polish contexts of literary disability studies. The issue features an article (in Polish) by Professor Agnieszka Kwiatkowska, entitled “The Construct of Diffuse Disability in Children’s Literature”. In her article, the author explores a distinctive way of representing disability in contemporary children’s literature, discussing, among other works, Sylvia Heinlein’s “Mittwochtage – oder „Nichts wie weg“, sagt Tante Hulda” [Every Wednesday, or “Let’s Just Go!”, Said Aunt Hulda], translated into Polish by Tomasz Osiński.

To jeszcze nie koniec sezonu konferencyjnego 😉🌞

Na początku upalnego lata w Pradze odbył się VII. kongres světové bohemistiky [VII Światowy Kongres Bohemistyki] poświęcony tematowi „Literatura a jazyk(y) v dialogu” [Literatura i język(i) w dialogu]. Dziś rozpoczęte 29 czerwca wydarzenie dobiegło końca.

Dr Urszula Kowalska-Nadolna z Instytutu Filologii Słowiańskiej UAM i członkini naszego Zespołu prof. UAM dr hab. Agnieszka Kwiatkowska wygłosiły tam referat „Jak Ivona Březinová píše o autismu? Specifika českých disability studies”, w którym porównały sposób ukazywania bohaterów z autyzmem w polskiej i czeskiej literaturze dla dzieci.

Gratulujemy prelegentkom i trzymamy kciuki za dalszy rozwój tych interesujących badań 🌱

The conference season is not over yet 😉🌞

At the beginning of this hot summer, Prague hosted the Seventh World Czech Studies Congress. This year’s theme was “Literature and language(s) in dialogue”. The event, which began on 29 June, concluded today.

Dr Urszula Kowalska-Nadolna (Institute of Slavic Philology, Adam Mickiewicz University) and Prof. Agnieszka Kwiatkowska, a member of our Research Team, presented the paper “How Does Ivona Březinová Write about Autism? The Specifics of Czech Disability Studies.” In their paper, they compared the ways characters with autism are portrayed in Polish and Czech children’s literature.

Congratulations to both speakers! We are keeping our fingers crossed for the further development of this fascinating research 🌱

Choć koniec czerwca zazwyczaj kojarzy się nam z wyczekiwaniem zasłużonego letniego odpoczynku, dla naszego Zespołu był to jeszcze czas intensywnej działalności naukowej.

W dniach 24–28 czerwca 2026 roku prof. UAM dr hab. Ewa Rajewska, dr Anna Czernow i mgr Michalina Wesołowska z Zespołu ds. Badań nad Literaturą i Kulturą Dziecięcą WFPiK UAM wzięły udział w 17th Biennial International Conference poświęconej twórczości L.M. Montgomery organizowanej przez L.M. Montgomery Institute na University of Prince Edward Island w Kanadzie 🍁📚

Tym razem temat konferencji to „L.M. Montgomery and Change”. Nasze badaczki wygłosiły referaty 📝:

– prof. Ewa Rajewska „In Praise of Marilla”
– dr Anna Czernow „Winds of Change: L.M. Montgomery’s Novels in 100 Years of Polish Reception”
– mgr Michalina Wesołowska „Between Stability and Change: The Dynamic Essence of Anne Storyworlds in English and Polish Contexts”

To już kolejna edycja tej konferencji z udziałem członkiń naszego Zespołu. Cieszymy się, że możemy być częścią międzynarodowej społeczności badaczy i badaczek twórczości L.M. Montgomery, i mamy nadzieję, że udział w tym wydarzeniu stanie się stałym elementem naszej działalności naukowej. Kto wie – może już jest to miła tradycja? ;)

While the end of June is usually associated with looking forward to a well-deserved summer break, for our Research Team, it was still a time of intensive academic activity.

From 24 to 28 June 2026, Prof. Ewa Rajewska, Dr Anna Czernow, and Michalina Wesołowska, MA, of the Children’s Literature & Culture Research Team participated in the 17th Biennial International Conference devoted to the works of L.M. Montgomery, organised by the L.M. Montgomery Institute at the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada 🍁📚

This year’s conference theme was “L.M. Montgomery and Change.” Our researchers presented the following papers 📝:

– Prof. Ewa Rajewska, “In Praise of Marilla”
– Dr Anna Czernow, “Winds of Change: L.M. Montgomery’s Novels in 100 Years of Polish Reception”
– Michalina Wesołowska, MA, “Between Stability and Change: The Dynamic Essence of Anne Storyworlds in English and Polish Contexts”

This was another edition of the conference attended by members of our Research Team. We are delighted to be part of the international community of L.M. Montgomery scholars, and we hope that participating in this inspiring event will become a lasting and enjoyable tradition for our team. Who knows – perhaps it already is? 😉

Mamy kolejną miłą wiadomość :)

Nakładem Wydawnictwo Universitas ukazała się książka „Złote pióra. George MacDonald, James Matthew Barrie, Cicely Mary Barker – twórczość, polska recepcja, propozycje przekładowe”, której autorką jest dr Aleksandra Wieczorkiewicz – członkini naszego zespołu.

Monografia poświęcona jest angielskiej literaturze dziecięcej „złotego wieku” i jej recepcji w Polsce. To jednak nie tylko obszerne studium – książka zawiera również pokaźny aneks z autorskimi tłumaczeniami wybranych utworów.

Gratulujemy Autorce tej imponującej publikacji i życzymy jej wielu zainteresowanych czytelników 📚

We have another piece of good news! :)

A new book by Dr Aleksandra Wieczorkiewicz, a member of our research team, has just been published by Wydawnictwo Universitas: „Złote pióra. George MacDonald, James Matthew Barrie, Cicely Mary Barker – twórczość, polska recepcja, propozycje przekładowe” [The Golden Pens. Works of George MacDonald, James Matthew Barrie and Cicely Mary Barker in Polish Reception and a New Translations].

The monograph explores the Golden Age of English children's literature and its reception in Poland. It is not merely a comprehensive study – the book also includes a substantial appendix featuring the author’s own translations of selected works.

Congratulations to the author on this impressive publication! We wish the book a wide readership📚

Gratulacje dla doktory Agnieszki Kocznur! 🎉

Z ogromną radością informujemy, że 15 czerwca 2026 nasza koleżanka i członkini zespołu, Agnieszka Kocznur, obroniła rozprawę doktorską zatytułowaną „Nastolatka w polu literackim początku XXI wieku. Od powieści dla dziewcząt do literatury YA” przygotowaną pod opieką prof. UAM dr hab. Magdaleny Bednarek.

Za tym sukcesem stoją oczywiście lata pracy, niezliczone godziny badań, studiowania literatury i pisania. Cieszymy się, że Agnieszka osiągnęła cel, do którego konsekwentnie dążyła. Brawo!🎓

We are delighted to announce that on 15 June 2026, our colleague and team member, Agnieszka Kocznur, successfully defended her doctoral thesis entitled “The Adolescent Girl in the Literary Field of the Early 21st Century: From Girls’ Novels to YA Literature”, supervised by Prof. Magdalena Bednarek.

Behind this success, of course, lie years of hard work, countless hours of research, reading, and writing. We are delighted that Agnieszka has achieved the goal she has consistently worked towards. Well done, Agnieszka!🎓
