CellMat4ever Projekt B+R zmierzający do opracowania ognioodpornego i wodoodpornego materiału na bazie celulozy

The aim of the project is to develop bio-based innovation systems from forestry biomass intended for production of advanced lignocellulosic materials being resistant to variation in air humidity and temperature and/or fire conditions. The idea is to estimate the influence of carbon nano- and micro- molecules on the thermal degradation process. The second assumption of the project is to develop a t

echnology for chemical modification of lignocellulosic material to increase water resistance. The idea is to estimate the influence of different kinds of silanes and natural polymers on hygroscopicity and absorptivity of materials. The assumption of the project is the use of wood and paper and their modification with carbon micro- and nano-particles in order to obtain an innovative material with increased resistance to fire and heat radiation and maximizing the coefficient of dimensional stability of wood and lignocellulosic materials.

The scientific research project will soon come to end, but we are still working hard. What do you see in the pictures?
1. Laboratory work related to the preparation of raw materials for the production of prototype, light-weight, fireproof panels based on cellulose fibers.
2. Moulds for the production of prototype panels with prepared modified cellulose pulp.
3.Production of moulds for forming cellulose panels.
4.Filling the moulds with modified cellulose pulp.

Scientists from the Wood Protection and Conservation Laboratory at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology of the Poznań (Technologia Drewna - Uniwersytet Przyrodniczy w Poznaniu) University of Life Sciences (PULS) are participating in the international research project CellMat4ever. Within the framework of project, Polish (POSkładani.pl) and Norwegian scientists (NIBIO) are conducting research aimed at creating new cellulose-based materials. These materials will have new functional properties, such as increased water resistance or reduced flammability. Replacing synthetic resins with natural- binders in cellulose-based materials is a future direction in modern paper technology. The composites developed by the research team have increased fire resistance. Compared to traditional plywood made from natural wood, the new material is more difficult to ignite and better prevents the spread of fire. In CellMat4ever project, we aim to create a substitute or alternative solution for layered panel materials. This plywood can be successfully used in the construction of yachts, compartments in railway wagons, or camper vans

The conference “Future of Wood” took place on February 1, 2024 during the BUDMA Fairs in Poznań. Prof. Dr. Bartłomiej Mazela presented a lecture “Wood and wood-based materials in modern building engineering”. The llecture was focused on the potential of wood as the material, its environmental advantages and the key features as related to building engineering. Professor Bartłomiej Mazela referred to the ongoing “CellMat4ever” project and presented exceptional progress in applications of construction timber and referred to achievements in engineering of wood and lignocellulosic materials. The main objective of the project is to produce an innovative material based on cellulose, lignocellulosic raw material or modified wood with new functional properties, i.e. reduced flammability and increased water resistance.
