Yesterday, the University Hall was filled with world music, emotions and a meeting of cultures 🌍

🤝 For the tenth time, the AMU Faculty of Modern Languages and Literatures (Wydział Neofilologii UAM) is organising Cultural Diversity Days – a celebration of openness, languages, music and intercultural encounters. This year’s edition was kicked off by the ‘Five Corners of the World’ Jubilee Concert 🎶

🎹🎤 The event was part of the 17th International University Choirs Festival Universitas Cantat 2026 (Universitas Cantat), which brought together academic choirs from around the world in Poznań from May 9 to 13

🎼 During the Jubilee Concert, we enjoyed jazz, blues, Balkan, Indian, Latin American, and even the sounds of country. It all came together in one harmonious performance, proving that music and culture know no boundaries.

There are still more CDD events to come, including:

📍 16 May – Cultural Diversity Days at the Museum of World Cultures
An open meeting and discussion with international students studying at the AMU Faculty of Modern Languages and Literatures as part of Museum Night.

📍 21 May – Cultural Diversity Days at the AMU Faculty of Modern Languages and Literatures. Workshops, games, mini-lectures, world cuisine, speed talking and multilingual karaoke for university and secondary school students.

The event is funded by the City of Poznań (Poznań Przyciąga)

Best of both worlds - another anniversary went with flying colours! 😁

107 years ago, Wszechnica Piastowska laid the foundation for what Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan is today. Yesterday, we experienced not one but two great events 🎶🇪🇸

🎤 🌸 Firstly, the traditional May Concert at the University Hall brought us to a world of jazz and swing with a little Latin twist. An artistic evening by Chór Akademicki UAM - AMU Choir, Big Band, and solo performers inspired us to dream of greatness, to listen to "Fly Me to the Moon", to dance to "Mas Que Nada", and to be exhilarated by "True Colours".

🇪🇸 💃🏻🕺🏽🎲 Secondly, thanks to a group of Erasmus students from Spain, a Spanish Culture Day was held at the Welcome Centre - a unique meeting filled with joy, friendship, connection, games, small surprises and a little taste of the Iberian Peninsula.

Evenings like this are truly memorable 😊Thank you for joining us 🤗

Representing Poland abroad! 🇵🇱🌏

Jan Ziółkiewicz, a student of Languages and Literatures of World Regions, speciality Cultural Linguistics (Asian Region: Far East) at the AMU Faculty of Modern Languages and Literatures (Wydział Neofilologii UAM), is participating in a bilateral exchange programme in Indonesia. 🇮🇩

In addition to his classes, he had the opportunity to join an initiative that united international students from nearby universities, who showcased their cultures and traditions 🤩

💬 "ICCF is an event organised every year at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. I was the only Polish person there! I cooked over 150 portions of pierogi with cabbage and mushrooms, and brought along our traditional sweets – krówki. 🥟🍬

💬 Many people were keen to learn about studying at our university. The food proved very popular and quickly disappeared from my stand. I also had the opportunity to learn about other participants at the event, including their cultures, traditions, and cuisines 😊

💬 It was a highly positive experience. I encourage everyone to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by AMU. The memories will certainly last a lifetime – he concludes.

International experiences, new friendships and the promotion of your culture – this is what studying beyond borders looks like! 😁

Volleyball 🏐, basketball 🏀, football ⚽? Or perhaps swimming 🏊, tennis 🎾 or yoga 🧘🏻‍♀️? It doesn't matter what you choose, as long as you get moving 😁

The early days of May are traditionally when the true sporting and competitive spirit is unleashed on our campuses! 🔥🏆

Today, from early morning, to celebrate AMU Sports Day (UAM SPORT), the entire academic community is participating in various events – from football ⚽, volleyball 🏐, and basketball tournaments 🏀, through tennis 🎾, badminton 🏸, and chess ♟️, to a spring run 🏃🏃🏻‍♀️ and a Nordic walking 🚶🏼‍♀️🚶‍♂️ event. The Body & Mind zone with yoga and Pilates ensures there is also time for relaxation 🪷🧘🏼‍♀️

All that matters is good fun with friends, rest and, of course, a bit of exercise ☺️

The grand opening at the AMU Sports Hall, attended by the Rector Bogumiła Kaniewska, and the presentation of awards to the best athletes are all behind us 🎖️ But there is still plenty of action ahead 😉

At the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology (Wydział Filologii Polskiej i Klasycznej UAM), we explored "Beyond Language" 🗣️🚀

🎓 On 4 May, the Mickiewicz Hall at Collegium Maius hosted the international interdisciplinary academic conference ‘Beyond Language 2026’. The event forms part of a major conference series taking place over the coming days in Warsaw, Lublin, Wrocław, Lviv, Rome, Bucharest, Sosnowiec, Kraków, Łódź and Vienna 😮

🤝 It has been organised for several years together by the MSI College of the University of Wrocław, the Interdisciplinary Humanities Research Unit of the AMU Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology and a group of co-organisers that grows year on year.

🏛️ The session in Poznań, led by Prof. Rafał Dymczyk, Prof. Aleksander Mikołajczak, and Prof. Konrad Dominas, examined the Roman road, the Via Egnatia, from an interdisciplinary perspective. Nearly 80 participants shared their insightful and thought-provoking findings.

💡They discussed issues related to the construction, use, and preservation of the remains of this significant road from the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires, which now spans Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Greece. Students from the Interdisciplinary Individual Studies (MSI) and Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) programs, along with guests from twelve Ukrainian universities, have prepared speeches.

⏳ The official opening of the "Heraclea Sintica" exhibition served as a side event to the conference, attended by representatives of the Bulgarian municipality of Petrich, the Vice-Rector of Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Prof. Michał Banaszak, and the Deans of the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology, Prof. Krzysztof Skibski, and the Faculty of History, Prof. Przemysław Matusik.

The event was held under the patronage of the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Bulgaria in Greater Poland, Prof. Rafał Dymczyk.

How trees outwit their predators? – A scientist from Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, co-authored an article in Nature Ecology and Evolution 🐛💡

🌳 When oak trees suffer significant damage from caterpillars, they open their buds later in the following spring. An international research team has demonstrated that this strategy is highly effective against the trees' predators.

💬 "During this time in spring, trees are getting leaves again. This is called budburst. Some trees get them earlier than others. Within tree species, some individual trees also get their leaves earlier than others. Many caterpillars, the larvae of moths and butterflies, like to eat those fresh, soft leaves. They thus must synchronise their activity with the timing of the budburst of the trees they are on [...]", says Prof. Freerk Molleman from the Department of Systematic Zoology, AMU Faculty of Biology (Wydział Biologii UAM)

🛰️ The researchers analysed a total of 137,500 individual observations spanning five years, from 2017 to 2021. The satellites provided data at a resolution of 10x10 metres per pixel, which roughly corresponds to the crown of a single tree. A total of 27,500 such pixels were analysed across 60 forest areas.

🔎 The year 2019 proved particularly revealing, as the region experienced a massive outbreak of the gypsy moth. “The radar sensors recorded exactly which trees were stripped bare and how they reacted in the following year, " emphasises Professor Jörg Müller, University of Würzburg (Germany) Chair of Conservation Biology and Forest Ecology and co-senior author of the study.

💬 “This discovery fundamentally changes our previous understanding of the onset of spring in the forest,” says the Würzburg researcher. It shows that trees do not merely react passively to the weather in timing their leaves to emerge but also respond flexibly to biological threats.

What mysteries do the Apocalypse frescoes on Mount Athos hide? 🤔🖼️

Members of the Interdisciplinary Humanities Research Unit at the AMU Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology (Wydział Filologii Polskiej i Klasycznej UAM), comprising Prof. Aleksander Wojciech Mikołajczak, Prof. Rafał Dymczyk and Kostiantyn Mazur, PhD, have conducted unique research on Mount Athos in the last few days 😮

These studies focus on the frescoes from the Monastery of St Dionysius that depict a cycle of 21 Apocalyptic scenes according to St John.

🔍 Prof. Aleksander Wojciech Mikołajczak and Prof. Rafał Dymczyk, in preparation for a book discussing the history and significance of this series of paintings, have participated in over twenty research expeditions to Mount Athos. They were joined on their journey by Kostiantyn Mazur, PhD, whose photographs of the frescoes and the Athos landscape will be a vital part of the publication.

⛰️ Mount Athos is a living open-air museum of Byzantium. Since the 11th century, a rule known as Avaton has been in force here, forbidding women and all female animals from accessing the site, except wild birds and cats.
This place is undoubtedly the spiritual centre of Orthodoxy, home to 20 monasteries, 17 of which are Greek and 3 Slavic: the Serbian monastery of Chilandar, the Bulgarian monastery of Zograf and the Russian monastery of St Panteleimon.

Did you know that the Governance Act of 1791, known as the Constitution of 3 May, was the first codified, modern constitution in Europe and the second in the world? 🇵🇱

Today, 3 May, we celebrate the adoption of our first constitution. Although it was in force for only 14 months, it remains to this day the foundation of Poland’s republican tradition. It transformed the state into a constitutional monarchy and introduced the principle of a tripartite government. A bicameral parliament was to express the will of the sovereign nation.

Commemorations will be held throughout the country.
Traffic difficulties may occur.

You are more than welcome to celebrate Constitution Day on 3 May with us 😊
