15th Conference of the Committee for Migration Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences
Emigration, immigration, and integration in an era of social and political polarisation
Gdańsk–Gdynia, September 23–25, 2026
On behalf of the Program Council and the Organizing Committee of the 15th Jubilee Conference of the Migration Research Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, we invite submissions for the thematic session:
LANGUAGES ACROSS BORDERS: MIGRATION, IDENTITY AND INTEGRATION
This conference session will explore the linguistic aspects of international migration. The session will engage with the concept of linguistic integration, understood as the ability to use the language of the host society. The mobility of modern societies requires not only proficiency in English in order to communicate on the international stage and find employment, but also knowledge of other languages, both the so-called ‘big’ languages and local minority languages. While often treated as a key indicator of successful integration, linguistic integration is a complex, non-linear, and socially negotiated process. It encompasses not only communicative competence but also participation, identity formation, and well-being, and may be interpreted differently by migrants and host communities alike. The session will foreground language as a key factor in migrants’ integration, emphasizing its role in accessing education, employment, and social participation, as well as in fostering a sense of belonging. It will also examine the linguistic barriers migrants face and the policy responses developed by host societies to address these challenges and promote social cohesion.
We welcome contributions addressing (but not limited to) the following topics:
Heritage language maintenance and shift
Language ideologies in migration contexts
Family Language Policy, language maintenance and education
Language and identity construction in migration
Negotiating belonging through language
Measuring and conceptualizing linguistic integration
Language and access to public services
Links between language proficiency and well-being (social, mental, physical)
Everyday multilingual practices in migrant communities
National and local language policies toward migrants
Integration policies and language requirements
Tensions in multilingual or bilingual regions
Institutional responses to linguistic diversity
Linguistic and cultural diversity in multilingual classrooms

The deadline for submitting paper proposals is 15 May 2026.

Conference Fees
PLN 750 – regular fee,
PLN 400 – reduced fee for PhD students (and students) and members of the Migration Research Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences
