Umberto Eco at the University of Lodz” is a series of events dedicated to the Italian writer and academic who in May 2015 is receiving the Honorary Doctorate of the University of Lodz. The festival celebrates Umberto Eco’s achievements and his influence on the modern humanities and culture, both high and popular, aimed at a general audience. “The Labyrinth of Signs” starts in late March with a Lectio Magistralis of H.E. Ambassador of Italy to Poland, which, over the course of the next three months, will be followed by over 20 different events, including panel discussions (focusing on the figure of Umberto Eco – a novelist, essayist, semiotician, art historian, bibliophile, and collector) and performances (location-based games, literature night, book fairs, concert). The schedule also features educational events (sign interpretation workshops for high school students), as well as those aimed at professionals (a seminar on rhetoric for teachers, inspired by the ideas of Umberto Eco).
