Architecture for Society of Knowledge

Architecture for Society of Knowledge ASK is a Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Planning at the Warsaw University of Technology.

ASK reflects architectural evolution from 20th century space design towards 21st century information processing design. It anticipates the shift in paradigm in the nature of architectural practice and theory. It provides an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to reinforce student competence in answering crucial questions ushered in with the crisis of globalization. Can local context present new

opportunities for non–uniform global trends? Can new conditions of situated design and problem solving reveal the opportunities of previously marginalized societies while maintaining richness of diverse? Can we aspire towards vision of architecture derived from the diverse richness of the emerging society of knowledge? The ASK Program aims to equip young practicing architects with the formative experience required for:

Active participation in the global architectural knowledge society, and critical interpretation of the creative aspects of design and design collaboration. Collaborative and interdisciplinary practice of architecture. Architectural research exploring new design technology and theory. The key forces impacting on the practice of architecture in the knowledge society are aspects of globalization as well as new digital media and networks. The ASK program reflects the impor-tance of the contemporary trends in design. Tendencies reflected in ASK Program curriculum and deployed in problem based learning of the design studio include:
CAD, Computer aided design including problem modeling + simulation
VDS, distributed design collaboration
CNC, numerically controlled prototyping and design fabrication

On October 14, first year ASK students visited Słupsk to explore the site for their Design Studio I course led by dr. inż. arch. Jakub Szczęsny .art . It is located at the corner of Staszica and Wolności streets, an area that once belonged to the uniformed services.

With the help of local partners, the students got to know the character and context of the space, for which they will develop proposals for communal housing combined with social and public functions.

Their task is to create concepts that not only respond to the needs of the site but also blend with the identity and atmosphere of the surrounding neighbourhood.

We look forward to sharing the results of this collaboration soon!

“Things happen even when you do nothing“
The Robotics course, led by mgr. inż. arch. Krzysztof Nazar and mgr. inż. arch. Agnieszka Nowacka during the third semester of the ASK program, introduced students to programming with Arduino and its applications in interactive design, combining elements of coding, electronics, and fabrication. After initial workshops testing sensors, circuits, and digital logic, students explored possibilities for a collective installation by preparing prototypes and presentations.

From these, the group selected the idea of creating a kinetic sculpture that responds to its environment: remaining still in noisy conditions, and gently blooming into illuminated flowers when silence is achieved. The concept aimed to spark curiosity, encourage moments of calm, and invite layered discovery as users connected the sculpture’s movement to the surrounding atmosphere.

Realizing this vision required intense multidisciplinary work, bringing together programming, hardware design, 3D printing, laser cutting, wiring, and handcrafted mechanics. The project developed as a movable “totem,” housing electronics inside while flower mechanisms opened and closed through string-driven tension and LED lighting.

Built through trial and error, the process demanded collective problem solving, creativity, and persistence. What began as classroom work quickly became an immersive effort, with students staying long after lectures, driven by curiosity, collaboration, and the joy of making something meaningful together.

The final installation, completed with the help of many dedicated volunteers, will be unveiled at the Faculty as a shared achievement of creativity and determination.

Academic Society Cooperative
By: Parisa Ebrahimi , Dominik Figurski, Liudmila Rudz & Philip Sule

To wrap up the series of projects produced during Design Studio 1, this final group proposed a cooperative residential complex designed for academic professionals, researchers, and families.

The masterplan introduces three residential zones and a multifunctional community center, balancing modern living with ecological responsibility. Cooperative housing models and modular typologies support diverse lifestyles; from family apartments to shared student units, while reducing car use and promoting cycling.

Sustainability lies at the core of the concept: existing trees are preserved, allotments and playgrounds encourage shared outdoor life, and innovative materials such as Mycelium and Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) demonstrate environmentally conscious construction methods.

The Academic Society Cooperative envisions a neighborhood that fosters collaboration, inclusivity, and ecological resilience in equal measure.

WUWA+: Co-op Housing in Wrocław
By: Omotara Adebayo , Somia Hassan .ha , Ewa Sokołowska & Joanna Szczepańska

Here’s a look at another result of the Design Studio 1 course. This group J.E.S.T (Joanna, Ewa, Somia, Tara) developed a housing scheme that reimagines cooperative living for academic staff in Wrocław.

Drawing inspiration from Polish cooperative traditions (spółdzielnia mieszkaniowa) and the experimental WUWA neighborhood of 1929, the project proposes a sustainable and democratic alternative to the challenges of today’s housing market. The scheme introduces a mix of forest-inspired cabins for young residents, multi-family apartments for households of different scales, and a variety of shared facilities such as communal kitchens, laundromats, and bicycle storage.

The concept aims to foster inclusivity across generations and lifestyles, creating a community that is both socially and environmentally resilient. Financing is based on a cooperative model, combining membership fees, grants, and loans to make housing more accessible and affordable while strengthening collective responsibility and participation.

ANELLO: Co-op Living in Wrocław
By: Garance Ravel , Lissa Thomas .arc & Konrad Zaremba

As part of Design Studio 1, led by dr. inż. arch. Jakub Szczęsny .art in collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture at Wrocław University of Technology, this group developed ANELLO – a housing project rooted in community, sustainability, and flexible living.

Situated in Wrocław, ANELLO introduces a cooperative housing model with 112 diverse units designed for students, couples, and families. The project emphasizes collective ownership, democratic participation, and shared resources, while weaving in ecological strategies like rainwater harvesting, solar panels, and preserved hazelnut orchards.

The ring-shaped layout fosters interiority and connection, with layers of gardens, semi-public courtyards, and gathering spaces that strengthen community bonds. With its range of adaptable typologies, ANELLO envisions a resilient and inclusive way of living for the future.

This is one of the student projects developed during the semester, stay tuned as we share more soon!
