🥧Happy Baklava Day! 🥧
🍯Baklava is a sweet dessert from the Middle East. 🥜 It has thin pastry layers, nuts, and sweet syrup or honey. It tastes delicious! 😋
📜 A bit of history:
👑 Long time ago, in ancient Assyria, people already made early versions of baklava. Later, it became popular in the Ottoman Empire, where chefs perfected it for royal palaces. For centuries, it was considered a luxury dessert. Only in the 19th century, when pastry shops appeared, did baklava become popular among the middle class and available to everybody.
🥧 Baklava around the world:
🇹🇷 Turkey – made with pistachios or walnuts, served with sweet syrup, kaymak (cream) or 🍨ice cream. Gaziantep baklava is even listed by UNESCO as part of the world’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.
🇬🇷 Greece – made with honey and cinnamon and often has 33 layers of pastry, symbolizing the years of Christ’s life.
🇦🇲 Armenia – flavored with warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg.
🇱🇧 Lebanon – flavored with🌹rose water and 🍊orange blossom water, famous for its delicate taste.
🇮🇷 Iran – light, diamond-shaped, and aromatized with 🌹rose water.
🇦🇱 🇧🇦 🇧🇬 🇭🇷 🇷🇸 🇲🇰 🇲🇪 🇷🇴 🇸🇮 The Balkans and other countries – many 🥜nut variations, often baked for religious holidays and family celebrations.
